Beautiful "3-way" upgrade
My home office overhead light has a switch at each end of the room. One switch needed replacing, so I replaced both switches with these Enerlites "3-way" decorator switches in silver. They look great with their matching silver decorator wall plates (Amazon B07HNBBF2B). Before I installed the new switches, I tested one with a continuity tester to see how it works. Facing the switch as it would be installed in a wall, with the "TOP" label up: • Pressing the paddle *up* connects the two terminals on the right, just like an ordinary light switch that has two terminals on the right. • Pressing the paddle *down* connects the terminal on the bottom right to the one terminal on the bottom left, as a second way to power a circuit. This means the terminal on the bottom right is the "common" terminal of an SPDT switch (single pole, double throw). Knowing this helped me see that my old switches were wired to work this way too, and the Wikipedia article on "multiway switching" showed me that my office overhead light is wired with the "common" or "traveler" system (where the light is on when both switches are up or both are down). I replaced my switches with my circuit breaker off to be safe. First I replaced one switch, then I tested the light to confirm I replaced it correctly, then I replaced the other switch. Your lights may be wired differently, so if you have any questions, you could have a professional wire them to be safe.
