Flower or Thorn
The english transalation of 'Phool aur Kaante' is 'Flower and Thorn'.The Bollywood (Indian Movie Industry) action movie was released in 1991 to critical acclaim and box-office success. The theme of the movie is action/drama and tells the story of a troubled relationship between a father (Amrish Puri) and son (Ajay Devgan). The movie contained all the essential elements (Romance, Comedy, Melodious Music, Action and Emotions) for a commercial Bollywood entertainer at the time. The tuneful musical score provided by the award winning duo Nadeem-Shravan (Provided all the chartbusting melodious scores during the 1990's) is melodious and had a contributing hand to the success of the movie. Most of the songs in the movie were sang beautifully by Kumar Sanu (Famous veteran indian male singer) who was the numero uno singer of the 1990's mainly as a result of working with Nadeem-Shravan.The direction of the movie, which is provided by Kuku Kohli is average as he tends to pointlessly over extend many pivotal scenes, resulting in the audience losing interest. It was the debut feature of the lead male actor, Ajay Devgan who produces an impressive performance. The movie launched Ajay Devgan as an action hero, performing fresh and exciting action scenes chreographed by Veeru Devgan (Ajay Devgan's father) with ease. The performance earned Ajay Devgan the Fimfare award for best debut. The lead debutant actress Madhoo (Niece of Legendary Indian Actress, Hema Malini), plays Ajay Devgan's love interest and also provides a satisfactory performance. The show stealer of the movie is the now deceased veteran actor Amrish Puri who performs brilliantly as an underworld don who longs for the love of his son. When I watched the movie in 1991, I really enjoyed it as it was entertaining with exciting action scenes, which were ahead of its time. The main thing that really clicked with the young audience (including me at the time) was Ajay Devgan's heroic portrayal of an angry college youth, which made everyone dream of becoming a hero.Watching the movie now is unfortunately boring as it has not aged well due to the main story being beaten to death by hundreds of movies released after it. The length (2 hours 53 minutes) of the movie, which is too long does not help. The DVD, which I purchased for a bargain has poor sound (background noise) and picture quality, which does not help the movie. It seems that 'Spark' who have released the DVD, have transferred the VHS print directly onto DVD format without enhancing the picture or sound. It is a movie worth veiwing for the performances, action scenes and the music. However, I recomend you just view it on Sky/Cable/Internet as the DVD is not worth buying.
