From School Library Journal Gr 2-4-Vibrant images of raw and polished gems jump off the pages in this brief yet beautiful introduction to gemstones. Written in a conversational tone, the books cover how gems are created, where they can be found, and what makes them so valuable: basic facts for those beginning to pursue their interests in geology, mineralogy, and gemology. The green and white color scheme provides an aesthetically pleasing, soothing background. The selection, such as aquamarine and topaz, exposes children to less familiar gemstones, and the accompanying photos, particularly those depicting gems set in exquisite jewelry, enhance the text. Bold vocabulary words and fascinating sidebars ("Be a Gem Genius!") contribute to the overall solidity of the series. VERDICT Striking visuals and interesting tidbits make this series a fine option for browsers and those completing assignments.α(c) Copyright 2011. Lovely book about fascinating topic; a bit pricey
I bought 2 of these books when we returned from the Baltic with samples of amber fossilized resin for our grandchildren. Upon receiving the amber with the book the kids were quite excited about their adventure into another world. Our 8 1/2 grand daughter immediately started to read the book to all with fascination. The 5 year old was rapt. This set of grandchildren are now eager to explore the rest of the "Gem" series. Of note. Rajczak's book was just released at about the time we returned from our trip. Our grand-daughter surprised to read that the copyright was 2016 and excited to have a first edition! The pictures are lovely, the information clear and appropriate for elementary age children. The science of amber is presented in a way that drew their attention and had them asking for more and wanting to share. As a side note, I do think that the publisher is taking advantage of a particular population in their pricing. I bought one pre-publication and the other afterwards. One was almost $25. with tax; the other a bit over $30. I did quite a bit of searching for books for children on amber and this was the only one I could find.

Cover cut
The cover had a big box cutter slice. I bought it for a gift. Ruined it as a gift.
