Kindle, is it possible to rate this book 10 stars?
Sam Walton is really inspiring me in many ways, in living frugal and spending money wisely, in working hard committedly and relentlessly, in learning from many sources-copying idea here and there with yellow-pad notes and tape recorder-implementing it right away, in managing his teams and treating team as equal partners, and in being a family man despite of his workaholic nature. Wal-Mart proves that no single factor contributes to a company's success. It started out with a passion to compete and a love for retailing business. It is getting bigger because of its core value to always deliver the best value for the customers. It copied best practice here and there and implemented it in Wal-Mart in their own way to increase their customers' experience. They also invest heavily in their associates so that their customes get the best service at their stores. At last, they build such strong distribution centers using technology when investing in technology was not really a popular decision back then. This book released in 1993, so the tech invesment was really advance at that time. In one of the chapter, Sam said that he guessed Wal-Mart will achieve USD 100bio in sales by 2000. It did generate those revenue amount, even 30% higher, in 2000. Nowadays, in 2021, it even achieves more than 3 times of its 2000 revenues. I am really amazed with its growth although we also need to evaluate how it performs compared to Amazon these days. At last, for you who is looking for business guru, this book can be one of your inspiration. In one of the chapters, you can find 10 business rules stated by Sam Walton. If you're looking for a role model in career and in life, this is the right book for you. I couldn't find anything I dislike from this book, except that it is quite long, 317 pages, and I couldn't stay put in one book for too long. I have to admit that this book give me a lot of emotion. In the beginning, it brought out the ambitious and idealistic me. In the very end of the book, it led me to contemplate the meaning of life and make a promise to live a without-regret-life. His optimism and willingness to contribute even in deep illness brought me into tears. He is definitely one of my role model in life and career. Finishing this book felt like bidding farewell to a very inspiring mentor, very saddening. Rest well, Sam.

A Great, Down-To-Earth book that I took a lot away from.
"It was a real blessing for me to be so green and ignorant, because it was through that experience that I learned a lesson that has stuck with me through all the years: you can learn from everybody. I didn't just learn from reading every retail publication I could get my hands on, I probably learned the most from studying what John Dunham was doing across the street." Sam Walton This book was fun to read. Sam didn't want to write it at all, but John Huey won him over just in time. This book was written while Sam was on his death bed. Sam Walton: Made In America is written in a way that it feels like Sam Walton is sitting in front of you, telling you everything that happened in his life. The first two chapters, "Learning to Value a Dollar" and "Starting on a Dime," were great. Since reading them, I have picked up every coin I have seen laying around. At the end of the second chapter, Sam tells you about his Ben Franklin store that was making $250,000 in sales a year, with $30,000 t0 $40,000 of it being profit. After 5 years, his lease was up, and his landlord would not renew it for any price. He bought the store from Sam Walton, and Sam had to completely restart. I think that most people would have given up in that situation. Working hard and smart for five years to build the best Ben Franklin in the region just to lose it would be tough, but Sam didn't let it stop him. Every one of the biographies I've read has that in common. Sam Walton, Jeff Bezos, Tim Tebow, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Conrad Hilton, Jerry Weintraub, etc., all faced challenges that were a lot bigger than most people ever do, and they all overcame these challenges and became extremely successful. After he talks about his first setback, there are 300 more pages to read if you buy the paperback version for only $6. While Sam's book taught me how he became successful with Walmart, I learned something even more important from reading it. He taught me the importance of staying humble: "I still can't believe it was news that I get my haircut at the barber shop. Where else would I get my haircut? Why do I drive a pickup truck? What am I supposed to haul my dogs around in, a Rolls-Royce?" -Sam Walton At the end of the book, Sam gives a list of 10 rules that helped him become successful. To learn how Sam Walton overcame adversity, how he built Walmart, the value of being humble, and to read his list, buy Sam Walton: Made In America by Sam Walton with John Huey. All CEO or owners who have never read his book. Should ! They will have a better out look.
I bought this book years ago after Sam Passed away and being from Arkansas I met Sam a several times as he was out and about all the time just like a regular person. Not until I read the second time did I realize Sam had worked so hard at making the name Walmart come true. Came a long way from his first store he named on the front 5 WALTON 10. The first time I met him was at a Ben Franklin store and he working the stock I just thought he was an employee that worked there as I was talking to him. When I checked out I was told he was the owner. That did not mean a thing to me ! Because all owners of any type store they owned were workers also to save money and not have to hire another worker. That was the way it was in yesterday years.

Decent read
I was curious about the Walton and his infamous discount retail store got their start. This book fits the bill although I was expecting more of a biographical rather than the business history side.

This is one of the best, if not the best book about creating a ...
I couldn't believe his business earned more than Warren Buffet and Bill Gates combined ! Sam was at his deathbed when he wrote this book Made in America. This is one of the best, if not the best book about creating a business and management. I discovered that there are no tricks or secrets to become a billionaire and yet so few people make it. Here is an advise from Sam, the best business person in human’s history. More reviews on my website http://adamwojnar.com Rule 1. Commit to your business. Believe in you needs more than anybody else. I think I overcome every single one of my personal shortcomings by the sheer passion I brought to my work. Rule 2. Share your profits with all your associates, and treat them as partners. In turn, they will treat you as a partner, and together you will all perform beyond your wildest expectations. Rule 3. Motivate your partners. Money and ownership alone aren’t enough. Constantly, day by day, think of new and more interesting ways to motivate and challenge your partners. Keep everybody guessing as to what your next trick is going to be. Don’t become too predictable. Rule 4. Communicate everything you possibly can see your partners. The more they know, the more they will understand. If you don’t trust your associate to know what’s going on, they’ll know you don’t really consider them partners. Rule 5. Appreciate everything your associates do for the business. A paycheck and stock option will buy one kind of loyalty. But all of us like to be told how much somebody appreciates what we do for him or her. Rule 6. Celebrate your successes. Find some humor in your failures. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Loosen up, and everybody around you will loosen up. Have fun. Show enthusiasm, always. Rule 7. Listen to everyone in your company. And figure out ways to get them talking. The folks on the front lines, the ones who actually talk to the customer, are the only ones who really know what’s going on out there. Rule 8. Exceed your customers’ expectations. If you do, they’ll come back over and over. Give them what they want, and a little more. Don’t make excuses, apologize. It’s really an eye opener. This book is amazing. You probably haven’t heard of it because no one is really bothered to market it better. It has a crappy picture on the front page and no marketing whatsoever. Don’t worry; marketing doesn’t usually represent real value. This book is real gem. More reviews on my website http://adamwojnar.com

It is a classic book written in early 1990s but didn't feel old at all. Reading this book was like directly listening and seeing the energetic entrepreneur face to face. Lots of good advice for life and business.

Classic read
Sam Walton's Made in America: My Story is a truly inspiring read, offering an unfiltered look at the man behind the retail giant, Walmart. It's more than just a business book; it’s a masterclass in American entrepreneurship. Walton’s narrative is filled with practical wisdom and a down-to-earth philosophy that's as relevant today as it was when he built his empire. What really stands out is Walton’s relentless focus on the customer. He didn't just talk about it; he lived it. His emphasis on listening to customers, innovating constantly, and empowering employees is a core theme throughout the book. He highlights how this approach, combined with a willingness to experiment and even fail, was key to Walmart's success. For a business leader, this book is an essential reminder that humility and hard work are the ultimate tools for success. Walton's writing style is direct and no-nonsense, much like his business approach. He shares his story with genuine honesty, detailing not only his triumphs but also the setbacks he faced. It's a testament to his grit and determination. The book effectively captures his unique Gen Z-ish humor, especially in his anecdotes about a penny-pinching mindset and his famous practice of visiting stores and chatting with employees. This personal touch makes the story relatable and engaging, making the reader feel like they're getting a one-on-one lesson from a true titan of industry. In an era of complex business models, Made in America is a refreshing and straightforward guide to building a successful enterprise from the ground up. It’s an invaluable read for anyone interested in business, leadership, or simply the American dream. This book will not only provide insights into the retail world but also inspire you to tackle your own goals with the same tenacity and optimism that defined Sam Walton.
