Oranges in No Man’s Land tells the riveting story of ten-year-old Ayesha’s terrifying journey across no man’s land to reach a doctor in hostile territory in search of medicine for her dying grandmother. Set in Lebanon during the civil war, this story is told by award-winning author Elizabeth Laird and is based on personal, real-life events. Elizabeth stayed on the green line in Beirut in 1977 in a war-damaged flat with her husband and six-month-old son. Memories of her son sleeping in a suitcase on the floor, taking his first steps on the bullet-riddled balcony, playing with the soldiers on the checkpoint, and her husband racing through no man’s land in the buildup to a battle have all inspired this gripping and moving story. Elizabeth Laird says, “When I wrote Oranges in No Man’s Land , I didn’t know that Lebanon would be plunged back so soon into a nightmare. Caught up in that nightmare are children like Ayesha and Samar, whose lives political leaders so easily throw away.” Elizabeth Laird has been nominated four times for the Carnegie Medal and has won both the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize and the Children’s Book Award (UK). Her numerous books, including A Little Piece of Ground (Haymarket Books, 2006), have been published around the world. Review: Amazing - Amazing. Sad ending though. I cried. Read cause it is so good. Good for ages 10+ though fine for adults. Review: A great book to read to your child - A fantastic read aloud book for a 6-10 year old. A 10 year old girl protagonist risks her life in a war zone to help her grandmother. Lot's of warm loving characters, lots of adventure, some terribly sad moments but it is never too gory or scary. A great book to read with a child and discuss war and its effects. Very moving, should be up there in the classics of children's literature.

excellent book for kids ages 8-12
This well-written novel tells of Ayesha's challenge in finding medicine for her sick grandmother during Beirut's war-torn years. Ayesha crosses the notorious "Green Line" that divided the city during the war, and the book shows the challenges of war and how there are always good people on both sides, while maintaining its appropriateness for middle-grade readers. Highly recommend.

Poignant
It makes for such a beautiful read. It's short and sweet but so poignant and war is described in a very picturesque way.

An important lesson on humanity!
This was a brilliant quick read! I'm pretty sure that I had this in my kindle from when the kids were at school and they were studying this book. What a great little story to use as a topic aid. This told the story of wartime Lebanon and a little girl who lived just away from the border. After her father went off to fight, they lost their house in the bombing and her mother was killed, Ayesha and her 2 brothers and Gran, found themselves helped by a group surviving in one of the bombed out buildings. There, life was tough, but she found a friend in Samar and it was lovely to see how their friendship developed. When Gran's medicine ran out, Ayesha decided to cross through the border and no man's land to the other side to get more medicine. This journey was so dangerous. I loved how determined Ayesha was to help her Gran. As silly as the idea was, she fought her fear with only one thing on her mind. When she found Dr Leila and was helped, it really showed the futility of war. The people (in general) wanted to help others - they couldn't see the difference between them and just treated each other as human beings - which is how it should be! This was well written and was interesting, informative and exciting, conveying the danger and hardship throughout. A great little quick read.
