Newly re-mastered Single-disc ulitmate edition, starring Kurt russell and James Spader. Review: A classic. - This is one of my favorite movies. I generally prefer the tone of Stargate SG-1, but there would be no SG-1 if this movie hadn't gone first. The soundtrack is still amazing, and it still holds up quite well visually. Review: Great movie now with great image quality to match - I love this movie since I saw it in theaters and over the years I’ve watched at least a dozen times . I like this new Blu Ray edition. Much better quality than my old DVD I bought soon after it came out over a decade ago.

brilliant, with an incredible attention to detail
I watched this a quarter of a century ago....it was totally ahead of its time. wow. I hadn't watched it since, and I have to say, this film is superb, brilliant, with an incredible attention to detail..save for the fact that there is no such thing as the "Eye of Ra" in Egyptian mythology. That was the eye of Horus. Also, the creepy goat head with the horns at the end where Dr.Jackson brings Sha'ru (his new wife) and places her on the "sacrificial altar" was oddly forced and out of place in the narrative. It really gave me the heeby jeebies. The fact that the film creators decided to include wings to the statue and to mimic the western satanic effigy in the likeliness of Egyptian sculptures was disturbing and deceptive. The story is compelling, complex and the language, dialects and dialogue is exquisitely delightful to listen to. A lot of time and dedication was put into the telling of this tale, and like the pyramids of kheops, kephren and mykerinos it has stood the test of time. What a marvelous rediscovery. I had no idea it would be as amazing as when I first watched it. A sobering reminder that most films these days (2018) need a serious return to the golden age of sci-fi. The cast was so fantastic, what a pleasure to have Vivica Lindfors as Catherine Langford. She passed the following year so watching her was like witnessing the culmination of both a person's life long experience and the mastery of one's acting ability. Ah, this movie was better in 2018 than it was in 1994. READ THIS REVIEW HOLLYWOOD and get your crap together. THIS> FILMS LIKE THIS!

Real possibility that this is the truth about our world and the universe ....
I love Egypt and it's history - that 99% of the world has NO IDEA of .... I love movies that are "believable" - this one is. If you simply "OPEN YOUR MIND"

In a way, a very realistic movie...
First off, once you get past the idea of a Stargate the rest kind of falls into place. The government, with the help of Professor Daniel Jackson (James Spader), figures out how to work it. Pro. Jackson, with an escort of soliders led by Colonel Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell) step through it to the other side. They find a desert planet where humans are being made to mine for the same material that the gate was made from. The people are Egyptians who were removed from Earth over 10,000 years ago, by an alien, and even Daniel Jackson can't understand their language because living languages CHANGE. The movie is careful to stay away from many of the cliches of most sci-fi movies but also stays away from having characters which are TOO simple. Both Daniel and Jack (played by James and Kurt) are real people, not cardboard cut-outs, with all the flaws and merits of our own reality. The natives are catch between trying to be friendly towards strangers AND not pissing off their Gods. The science and technology used by Ra and his men look very sleek and very real. From the spaceship to the gliders, everything has a touch of old Egyptian myth mixed with advanced alien know-how. The DVD comes with two versions of the movie, Director's Cut and the theatrical cut, in which the former has audio commentary. The DVDs also have a great 'Making of Stargate' featurette, a 'Is There a Stargate?' short starring Erich von Daniken himself, trailers, scane access, crew and cast information and production notes. Everything you could want in a DVD set, a mixture of sound science fiction, a touch of great effects and the pinch of old fashion adventure. This is a great pop corn flick. Enjoy!

Open Wide The Gate
"Stargate" is fun, pure and simple. It takes history and science, spins them around in a blender with a cup of fiction, and cranks out a reasonably believable sci-fi classic. Starring James Spader as a geeky scientist who's really into decoding Egyptian heiroglyphics and a hard-nosed and slightly mentally unstable soldier played by Kurt Russell, "Stargate" gives the viewer a couple of things to ponder. What if "Ra" wasn't an actual god worshipped by early Egyptians, but an alien looking for a nice group of simpletons to turn into his slaves? What if those simpletons began to pick up on Ra's deception and run him off, only to have him gather up a few stragglers and start a slave colony on another planet that's linked to Earth via a "Stargate?" All of this sounds a little silly, but deep inside, we all know that there are some reasons to actually entertain the thought that aliens did interact with the ancient Egyptians. No matter here, it's just used as a backdrop for a wonderful story in which Spader, Russell, and a team of soldiers trek off to the other end of the Stargate in order to see what's there. When they do get to the other side, they find a colony of people enslaved by Ra. They're also trying to decipher the gate on their end of the universe in order to get home. They figure out the entire gate's code almost immediately, except for one symbol, which forces them to interact with the slave colony. Slowly but surely, they prove to the slaves that Ra can be overthrown and that he isn't an actual god. Rebellion ensues, and our heroes aid in the battle all the while trying to break the final code. This is a very fun flick to watch. It mixes just enough parts history, science, and gee-whiz to make for a wonderful tale. Along with Russell and Spader, it stars French Stewart (Third Rock From The Sun) as one of Russell's troops and Jaye Davidson as Ra. Highly recommended to fans of fantasy and sci-fi in general. The Devlin/Emmerich team hit a homerun with this one before stumbling a bit with "Independence Day." This film is much better and more believable than that flick in my opinion.

Other reviews maybe more technical & nit-picking, but for me the huge enjoyment is of having one of my favourite films here in the director's cut. The overwhelming success of this film against the critical panning on its release, is due to the fact it is pure escapism and has a huge band of dedicated followers & of course the successful tv spin-offs. The added scenes make more sense, but were edited for time, as is explained by the director & writer in the commentary, which is in the 'set up' section of the included extras. However, for me, it's the music that makes it so enjoyable. David Arnold's major breakthrough into film composing is a remarkable achievement. Arnold had almost nothing on his cv, but to compose a film score of this magnitude and actually make the music belong to the film, in the same way that John Williams' music for'Jaws' does, is the aforementioned achievement. The sinister opening bars of the title credits leading into the main theme followed by choral chanting as the details of a mask of RA is revealed, build to a crescendo of operatic proportions. In Giza where the STARGATE is discovered, choral singing of extraordinary beauty is heard & adds to the drama of the scene immensely. I recently purchased STARGATE: The Deluxe Edition (CD), which has the complete score & is the perfect companion to this excellent DVD, which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I have re-visited this review 6/01/17 and haves added further comments. I personally would welcome a commission for Mr Arnold to compose an opera worthy of Covent Garden, E.N.O. at the Coliseum or to throw the 'cat among the pigeons', an operatic orgasm to shake them all up at Glyndebourne! We wait...... Only the 76 year old Giorgio Moroder is on a par with Arnold regards composing and producing. Moroder has found a new young 'clubbing' audience....but I doubt wether we'll see David Arnold behind the record decks in an Ibiza nightclub!! I've said it before and I'll say it again, of there hadn't been STARGATE, there would be no INDEPENDENCE DAY!! I saw David Arnold at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall with the 70 piece Manchester Camerata conducted by Nicholas Dodd. The 'STARGATE SUITE' closed the 1st half, and left me in tears...... You must have this DVD if you love STARGATE..... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
