Q: How does this compare with the Microsoft trackball?

It's just as good, just as precise, BUT, it has two downsides:1. The ball is HALF the size. Yes, half. It's tiny. 2. The right click button is just a sliver of plastic.. quite easy to miss. I like this trackball, but I still prefer my larger-ball ones (the Logitech ones). Once those break down I will use this. It's a very decent piece of equipment, very sturdy, feels good to handle, but.. the ball is small.I am not a large man, my hands are either S or M based on glove size, and it is small for me.

Q: Does the track ball come out easily?

Yes it pops out quite easily if you have grip strength if not you can poke a pen from the back and it will pop right out. I swapped the ball from my other track ball that was blue and not black and it works better now.

Q: What does the switch located beside the scroll wheel does?

It is a DPI switch. I use it a lot. Flip it to go between fast and slow pointer speed. It is quite small for me (6'3"), but other than that I love it.

Q: Does the scroll wheel ever loosen up over time? Just got mine (Aug 2018) and the wheel is quite stiff, especially trying to tilt it.

I have used mine for a while and have never had a problem with the scroll wheel. I would not describe it as stiff. It has not changed over time.
