This Galuppi Mass for the delivery of slaves was written in 1765 for the Music Chapel of Venice's St. Mark's Basilica, of which the composer had just been appointed director. Written for soprano, alto, choir and orchestra, it shows the extraordinary It shows the extraordinary (and up to now largely unrecognized) contrapuntal mastery of Galuppi, who in his sacred works, perhaps even more than in his theatrical ones, reveals all of his talent as a composer.Mozart composed his Mass in C Major K 317 in 1779, and it is such a famous masterpiece that it needs no introduction.
