The description says it is a 'right angle flex shaft' but in the picture it appears to be pointing to the left - is this the right or left version?

You have to use it in the down position. Then it switches to a right angle flex shaft, but only if turned clockwise. Might work if you turned it counter-clockwise, but never tried it that way.

Does the phillips bit on the end come out? mine won't. i don't see any way this tool can be used with a drill bit? so, phillips screwdriver use only?

Push in on the front silver collar, the bit will pop out. Works with all hex quick release bits

can you use hex shank nut drivers with this too? like a 7/16 bit or just screwdriver bits?

If it's got a 1/4" shaft, this thing will turn it.

The bit seems to almost sink all the way into the shaft. There seems to be no way to tighten bit in the shaft. Is this how it is supposed to be?

You won't be able to "tighten" the bit up, push down on the bit and it will "lock" in place, push down on the silver ring to "unlock". The bit is designed to sink low to give maximum clearance in tight spaces and to be able to hold the screw between your thumb and index finger if need be and space allows. If you don't need that much space you can always use longer bits.
