A cracking read
Fast paced, well researched, well written and curiously humane among the violent actions. A brilliant series and well worthwhile. Recommended

Sharpe back to his roots
If like me your only contact with Sharpe is the TV series, then these three book are a must have. Not only are they well written, they offer a brilliant insight into the life of the common soldier in the British Army in the 18th and 19th century. A time when the common soldier had to survive in brutal and uncaring conditions, and that was before they came close to a battle situation. Being ruled by officers who bought their commissions, usually with little, if any, military training and who generally viewed the soldiers in their charge as nothing more the scum to be disgusted with. Then the NCO's that used the situation to exploit everything for their own gain and usually at the expense of the common soldier. While these books were written after the main books, which went to make up the TV series, they offer a ream of background information that fleshes out the characters in the TV films. As another reviewer mentioned, his introduction to Sgt. Obadiah Hakeswill immediately brings Pete Postlethwaite to my minds eye.Excellent books which if you enjoy well researched historical fiction will tick all the boxes.

Brilliant Bernard Cornwell
Have read this series before in hardback many years ago. Thought I would do it again but chronologically. Buying three books at a time is a great idea as it works out cheaper and gives you a longer reading time before purchasing another one.I have read all of Bernard Cornwells' books and I love them. The historical novels are great as you learn so much in an interesting and absorbing way. The characters are brilliant and the background is well researched. Will no doubt read the other series' again after the Sharpe novels.

Sharpe, Private Sharpe!
I love the Sharpe books. They did get a bit thin towards the end of Bernard Cornwell writing them, it felt like he was trying to shoehorn stories in to very minor battles on the peninsular. But these 3 early ones are fabulous. It sets up how Sharpe becomes the officer we know and love. Why did he get whipped? How did he get that scar on his face? It shows the start of his relationship with Wellington, even the first time he hold and shoots a rifle. Its fabulous stuff.

The Sharp books are always good. Just like the poor man's Hornblower
The Sharp books are always good. Just like the poor man's Hornblower. I suppose I am a romantic as I like the Hero that climbs to the top of the pile in spite of the odds and still retains his moral values.

A good story teller, and you learn some history into the bargain. The price is also good for three books
