Percy Jackson's Greek Gods

This book explains the Olympian Council along with Greek culture and mythology amazingly! It even talks about three gods that are not a part of the Olympian Council, which are Hestia, Hades, and Persephone. It explains the beginning of time, and how the titans took down Ouranos, and how the gods took down Kronos. It explains all of Zeus’ affairs and how each Greek god was born. It also includes certain mortals like Arachne and what happened them. I also like how it had Percy Jackson as the author, because that gave it a hint of humor and how he described his perspective of the Olympians. Thank you for writing this book Rick Riordan!!! 😁😁😁

This is an absolutely wonderful and riveting book. Written in the voice of Percy Jackson, many well known and more obscure Greek myths are related using the sarcastic humor of Percy. He adds his own obvious and often ridiculous contributions to the myths, such as having the Greek Gods using modern technology or eating junk food in addition to other activities related in the myths. These additions can easily be distinguished from the original mythology and add humor to often harsh stories. When the gods do horrible things like eat people, marrying their sisters, etc., Percy is grossed out and make comments about how nasty that is. This makes it a little easier for kids to handle that type of thing. Whenever Percy enhances the myths by giving his opinion about how something might have happened he clearly states that what he is saying is not actually stated in the mythology, and this often makes the retelling of stories that might not make sense in modern times easier for a juvenile reader to understand. I recommend this book as an excellent reference to Greek Mythology for both juveniles and adults who appreciate tales being told in a lively rather than dry style. Am really looking forward to reading Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes, coming in Fall 2015.

This, is by far, the best book of Greek mythology that I have read. Rick Riordan makes Percy’s tone about all of these people, very kid friendly and humorous. I would DEFINITELY recommend to anybody who loves Greek mythology!

Rating system: 1 star = did not like 2 star = it was okay 3 star = liked it 4 star = really liked it 5 star = it was amazing First, and most obvious thing, I got this in hardcover, and it's huge. I'm talking almost full ruler tall, 9 inches wide, and over 300 pages. It's pretty unwieldy to hold, depending how you like to hold your books. I like to hold mine higher, so it's better for my neck, and I almost smacked myself in the face a few times while turning the pages. I'm sure this book could have been a 600 or so page regular sized hardcover just fine, but my guess is they didn't want to scale down the pictures. They aren't frequent, but there are full page pictures scattered throughout. Something I didn't understand the need for was, there were random funny quotes from the text positioned and blown up. Like, Percy would say something funny, and then a couple lines down, the same way you would insert a small image, that sentence would be placed there as if to repeat the joke. Like, "haha did you catch that funny part? Well, here it is again just in case."I can see it being effective for someone skimming the book in store to try to grab their attention, but to someone reading the book at home, it seemed unnecessary. Anyway, Percy Jackson is the narrator for the legends of the origins of the world, and the 12 primary Greek Gods. I think this is likely far more interesting than a school text book version, but maybe not as detailed. Percy puts his own spin on the tales, and makes them as family friendly as possible. He also inserts his own two cents every so often. I didn't get to learn any Greek mythology in school, but I've always been interested, so I thought this book was a neat way to learn more than just what the series has been tossing out. I look forward to reading the book about Greek heroes in the near future.

So much better than just a list. I do have two complaints, though, neither of which really has anything to do with this book. The first is that I DESPERATELY want Carter Kane's Egyptian Gods and Magnus Chase's (did I remember his name right? I haven't reread that one yet) Norse Gods. PLEASE. The other is that I don't understand why these come up where they do in the goodreads reading order. It seems like they could be kinda anywhere and I am SO DESPERATE to get to Apollo and most of all Nico cause I somehow missed his series when it came out and I'm so ashamed.

I am not seeing any warnings in the reviews. So, parents, please read this before giving this book to your kids to read! I am a parent of an eight year-old boy who loves everything Percy Jackson, the books and the movies. I am a huge fan of the series as well. I do read the series to my son every night. But, I absolutely will not be reading this to my son at all anytime soon. Below is why. Yes, I have been reading this novel and I do love it. Yes, it is funny, sarcastic, and witty as others have noted. That is why I gave it 5-star rating. HOWEVER....The gods are made out to be rapist--big time rapists. Yes, Percy gives nice warnings and all of that. Percy does not excuse the gods behavior. But, it is in this book and there is a lot, in particular with Zeus. So, please, be very aware of this and decide if it is right for your child to read. I have an avid Greek mythology lover. From what I understand (I am aware I may be wrong but I read this is several different places) that the *original* myths were not that violent and Zeus (and none of the other gods) were painted as rapists. All the sex they did with goddesses and mortals were all consensual. The myths became more violent over time, particularly when the Romans took over, and that was how the gods became big-time rapists. Why Rick Riordan chose to paint the gods this why is beyond me. He has to know that kids will be reading this. I personally will not let my son be reading this until he is at least 13 years old and I can explain it to him in great detail.

This is super fantabulous for kids! I love his witty, humorous and sometimes snarky writing style. My 11 year old loves it! We've been taking turns reading while playing the new Minecraft Greek Mythology add-on, so yeah she's really into it and it's been fun for me too! I ordered yesterday and it arrived today via USPS, which is a surprise because we've had issues with USPS. :) Ok so back to the review, this book is great, you should buy it if your kid is interested in Greek Mythology. (period). As I said we just received it today, and are already into the third chapter. This is my first time reading Rick Riordan and I can say I'm a fan. Anyone that can write for kids like that is truly gifted. He is fabulous. I love it!

No tengo palabras para decir lo mucho que me gustó este libro, lo tenía en mi wish list todo el año pero no creí que llegaría la oportunidad de comprarlo, mucho menos sin proponermelo, pero cuando vi que esta joya estaba con casi la mitad de su precio en oferta no dude en encargarlo, después de leerlos los libros de Percy Jackson no me cabe duda que si veo un libro con el encabezado de este personaje o del autor no dudare en comprarlo porque se que será genial, y si, acabo de recivirlo (1 día antes de lo esperado, por cierto) leí el primer capítulo y es PERFECTO, tanto la calidad del libro, con ilustraciones muy hermosas y papel con calidad de hojas de revista, la narrativa de Percy que te hace querer saber más sobre las familias disfuncionales de estos dioses, y el tamaño del libro, si eres fan de Percy o los libros de Rick Riordan en general tienes que agregar este libro a la colección + el de los héroes que son los siguientes en mi lista. Otro plus: el libro no puede venir en una mejor condición además del tiempo y forma que se entregaron, esta vez se lucieron Amazon.

眠くならずに最後まで楽しめました。 何回か読み返して神話の概要が定着したら、次は大人向けのに挑戦。

Ich fand das Buch sehr gelungen. Schon seit Langem interessiere ich mich für dei griechische Götter-Mythologie. Dazu habe ich die kompletten Percy-Jackson- und Helden-des-Olymp-Reihen verschlungen- aber bisher nur auf deutsch. Hierbei sind mir manchmal einige seltsame Formulierungen aufgefallen, besonders bei den Helden des Olymp, die sicher der Übersetzung zu schulden sind. Rick im Original zu lesen war noch mal ein anderes Erlebnis. Ich mag die Figur von Percy, die lässige, flapsige Art, wie er die Geschichten der griechischen Mythologie erzählt. Auch stets mit einem Augenzwinkern aufgrund der teils absurden Geschichten. Allein die Beschreibung "If you like horror shows, bloodbaths, lying, stealing, backstabbing and cannibalism, then read on..." sag doch alles :D Er erzählt die frühen Geschichten der Mytholgie: Wie sind die 12 großen Götter entstanden und einige ihrer "großen" Taten. In diesem Buch kommen noch keinen Heldengeschichten oder ähnliches. Es ist sehr schön die Geshcichten auf so eine lockere und gutverständliche Art zu lesen. Ich bin zwar schon etwas älter als die angepeilte Zielgruppe, aber ich würde es jeden empfehlen, der Interesse an den alten Griechen hat... und Englisch kann.

If you are one of those who are about to ask me “what! Greeks have different gods?” or “why is that weird hairy dude carrying a pitch fork? (by the way it is not a pitch fork, its a trident) orwho slept with whom (don’t ask it’s a long list….even worse than the whole Lindsay Lohan hookup list) then this is your thing. Its freaking hilarious people I always knew Zeus was kind of a….. (you get the idea) but now I am convinced that so was his father, mother, sister, brother, daughter, son….basically the whole clan. You thought the Addams family was a freaky bunch, try the Olympians. I m confused as to how these people address themselves. “ Hey sister who is also my wife and mother of my children and somebody else’s as well….. (yeah …that’s definitely not going to work) Believe me. At one page they are sister-brother, then turn over and they are married and have children and then the wifey cum sister goes to have kids with somebody else and brother cum husband cum pervert has kids with somebody else…. Phew ! talk about familial issues and relationship status (and you thought your relationship was complicated ) I picked this book just after having completed D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths and by now I had a vague idea of who is who and who did what in Greek mythology. So basically “Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods” was just refreshing what I now knew about Greek Gods. But what I got was more than a run over. It was pure entertainment Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods is a hilarious take on the gods. It is sarcastic, humorous, and witty. Along with all these, it also gives you apt and relevant details on the twelve Olympian gods right from their very origin. The book scored with me with its humor. I was laughing so hard with each pages of this book There are so many twists and turns to greek mythology. Its more twisted and darker than the whole Corleone family from Godfather but the book maintains itself with the basics and essential details of the twelve Olympian gods. Trust me that is more than enough to make you want to bath yourself in fire to clean up the aftereffects of coming into close contact with the gods. But the book is a thorough entertainer and will keep your funny bones tickling Greek Gods are not exactly pure and saintly and in fact each comes with their own share of debauchery, wickedness, cruelty and creepiness. While all other books dwindle between keeping it light and less creepy, this book has brought out things in its true form yet not making you squirm with repulsion but dying of laughter. This book is your “Greek gods for dummies” but with a generous amount of humor. The language will crack you up and by the end you will know more about the twelve Olympians than what your teacher tried to squeeze into your brain.
