Can it stream my desktop wirelessly from another room?

Yes. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card and use the NVIDIA Geforce Experience app on your desktop. Add an App to stream from the Shield page. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and select mstsc.exe. Now click the added app, click edit, and rename "Windows Desktop". Now simply select from the Shield.

Would I not need my chromecast with this?

This has Chromecast built into it, and will function as such.

Will this device play large mkv files? can you download the vlc that will allow you to play 30 plus gb mkv movie files.

I use VLC which pulls the video from a wireless hard drive. I haven't played files around 30 gigs but it works just fine around 8-10 gig files. Using VLC is the main reason for me getting the device. Works great.

Can you install 3rd party apps not available in play store ?

Yes. You can sideload apps or download apps from a website and install them outside of the Play store.
