A new home for "Microsoft Flight" deceived fans.
This is a really nice software. I stopped trying to play MSFS way back - my last one was the "98" version. Last year I started playing "Microsoft Flight" and really enjoyed the good sceneries and missions. It was a civil flight simulator with goals and a purpose. I bought the extra sceneries and planes. Then MS quit development for the game...way to go, Microsoft. Flight Simulator X does not have the same nice graphics of it's younger sibling. However, it's a much more complete experience than the one provided by Flight. There are some very good stock sceneries, and a nice collection of small prop-driven planes. The missions included are great to get the feel of the thing, and some of them feature even nice dialogs like the ones from Flight. FSX has the same "traditional way" that the MSFS Series kept since the classic 5.0 version, but includes some nice improvements, and the missions give it a purpose for the goal-driven "player", like me. The virtual cockpits of the planes are very nice. You can play it with an XBox Controller, just like Flight - although it's harder to get a good view around, since the "view" control, in the right stick, is self-centering and there's no way to change that. But, being a much "greater" simulator than Flight, I'm very compelled to get a set of pedals and play it with my old CH Flightstick that's been kept stored for years with no use. If your computer is good enough (and I mean REALLY good, especially in the CPU department), and you got deep pockets, some add-on sceneries and graphic enhancements are really great and can take the overall looks of the game even ahead of those provided by Flight. This review may seem too focused in the "graphics" of FSX. Of course a good simulator is not simply good graphics. But since I play FSX because I would really like to be a real pilot of small planes, I really don't care too much about the planes themselves - to me, it's much more about the airports, airstrips, beautiful places to fly through and everything. Flying warbirds and jets is really not for me - so, to me, the sceneries are what matter the most. I'll always miss the nice Hawaii I had in Microsoft Flight. Overall, a great bargain and a very good software that can hook you up for hours each time you play it. And, for players like me, who use FSX to actually try to learn to fly and get a real feel out of it instead of just picking up countless warplanes for simply taking off and landing and gazing at the fine cockpits, I recommend buying one of the various books about "how to fly" available in Amazon or in your preferred bookstore, and playing a bit everyday.

The Best of an Old Favorite
I went up in a Citabria with a former U2 pilot. He described flying as hours of boredom punctuated by a few minutes of absolute terror. Flight Simulators are fun when there is an objective, something to do, something to learn beyond the hours of eyecandy scenery to view. Combat gives you an enemy to shoot, strafe or bomb. Civilian flight is a different challenge. Flight Simulator X has become just about the only game in town for civilian flight simulations. It's a great title, and the X Gold version is cheap, it includes all the service packs and the accelerator upgrade. It is still well supported by flight sim third party software. FSX has a better engine for flight and graphics than the older FS 2000/ FS2002/ and FS2004. Together with third party software to upgrade sounds, missions, environment, and scenery make it still fun. It is one of the best non competition games ever. You play against yourself and your personal learning curve. So the challenge is always there. The real fun is when you work at figuring out flight. Speaking as a gamer who loves Skyrim and Elder Scrolls, it is fun to play a game where you aren't looking for a cheat, or a glitch. Just take on the challenge of learning. I'm 65 now, and these old eyes and reflexes are still enjoying the challenge of flight. YOU WANT THIS VERSION; AND YOU WILL WANT ABACUS EZGPS NAVIGATION AS AN ADDON TO HELP YOU FLY ANYWHERE IN THE FSX WORLD. I used to love to play Flight Unlimited ii and iii; I kept a computer with xp just to keep those old games alive. So many of the flight sims ran on Windows 95 and 98 and did not transfer to the XP operating system. Flight Simulator X Gold won't install on my Windows 7 64 bit machine. Over the years I have collected the titles from Janes and other flight sims. How I loved Jetfighter 3 and ATF. Microsoft Combat Simulator is still alive and playable. FSX is the best title surviving the genre of years gone by.

Had to purchase this classic flight simulation from Microsoft even though they have stopped the development of this program. Easy to set up and start flying and I recommend this program. Another program you might want to consider is XPlane 10 by Laminar Research. It's a program heavily supported by user groups and although not as polished a user interface as Microsoft it offers some very realistic flying, worth a look and you can download a free demo to try it for yourself.
