Is there any venting in the laptop compartment? I like to leave work with my laptop on and would prefer to not have heat from the fan exhaust build up

If you put it in standby mode or sleep mode while in the backpack laptop compartment it should be okay!but my suggestion is it turn it off just to be safe!
