How does this compare to Fop?

FOP is a water-based pomade while Dapper Dan is a matte paste. The Dapper Dan has a stronger hold and low shine.

My husband is very particular about smells, does this have any kind of funny odor to it? And does it work well for beards?

This product has a mild vintage cologne scent. It would not be recommended for beard use. A beard wax or balm may be what you are looking for.

Does this look like you have nothing in your hair?

The paste itself isn't obvious. But your hairstyle could give it away I guess.
