Can this be used in the hot tub? I get loads of ideas when I'm sitting in my hot tub in the morning, but forget some when I'm out.

I’ve only used it in a shower, but I would think it would work in a hot tub as long as it’s suctioned to the wall/side good and not completely submerged under water.

Is the paper adhesive? Is it a sticky note

The paper is not adhesive like a stick note and is on a perforated notepad that you tear off.

What happens if I lose the pencil or run out of the eraser? Will any pencil do?

Any pencil will write. They might smudge. There is a very handy pencil holder which adheres to the wall with the same suction cups which hold the writing pad. Losing the pencil has never entered my mind. As for the eraser… I’m writing love notes in the shower… not resolving complex mathematical problems. I haven’t used it much.

what size are the papers?

The total pad size is 5 1/4 X 3 1/2 in. The actual paper portion is measured at 4 1/4 X 3 1/2 inches. Hope this is helpful!
