How big is the entire box-set?

The packaging box is approximately 6.15 x 4.4 x 1.15-inches.

Will this fit on a yongnuo yn685 n or yn868 n?

Yes, MagMod will work perfectly with the Yongnuo YN685 and YN868 speedlites. Here is an awesome video that shows you the easiest way to install your MagGrip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FewwiH90-4Happy MagModding :)

Does it leave a weird catchlight in birds' eyes like other flash extender do when you shoot "straight on"?

Yes, but it is very slight and a non-factor ! I think this is an excellent tool for its uses, the only negative I have about this product in the weight it adds to your setup. Shooting with a Nikon D500 w/battery pack, 200-500 f5.6 Sb-800 flash things get a somewhat heavy, but it is manageable ( not a deal breaker for myself ), also you may have to adjust the flash mounted piece for best performance, there is an excellent video explaining this.
