Almost indistinguishable from a Rode NT-1 in side-by-side test. Slightly warmer/friendlier tone
This mic is a sleeper and a heck of a value at this price. We tested it side by side with the NT-1, with 2 different voices, one a young female, the other a deep bass male voice.TLDR: It's just as good if not better than the NT1. For quite a bit less. Both voices read the same text into both mics. Listening to the recordings, both agreed these mics were almost indistinguishable from each other. The young female SLIGHTLY preferred the NT-1, mostly for its looks but also because she felt it was a bit more accurate. The Bass voice SLIGHTLY preferred this MXL 2006. He felt it made his deep voice sound a but warmer and friendlier, while still maintaining the same accuracy and depth as the NT-1.For voiceover work, This is an incredible value.(full disclosure: in the same test, we also tested the Sennhiser MK 416, MXL BD-1, and synco D2. They are different types of mics than the MXL 2006 and NT1, which are both cardioid condensers, so they aren't really comparable, but here are the results of our test anyway:THE REST- The Synco D2 (about $130) was garbage, terrible, and was sent right back. For voiceover work, It was flat, made the speaker sound boring, "dead" and "lame" were adjectives applied.- The BD-1 (About $80) was a surprise hit. Being the only dynamic mic in the test, it was the best by far at capturing singing. It kept all the nuance, feeling, and emotion that ALL the condenser mics seemed to "strip out" of the singing. But because it's a dynamic mic, you had to get right up to it (lips almost touching) if you wanted to capture decent volume for spoken voice work. I guess that's why everyone uses condenser mics for voiceover work.- The Sennheiser (about $1000) was the overall winner for voiceover work. It did everything well. It was the most queit with the tighest axis, so it could be used in a less perfect recording environment as well. It's no surprise, at that price it has the best quality everything inside. Of course it's a differnt kind of mic, being a shotgun. It captured everything the voices were doing with incredible detail. And, for some reason hard to explain, both voices felt it made them sound better than any other mic.AND YET. the NT1 and this MXL 2006 were basically tied for a close 2nd, at much lower price points. They both sounded really clean, crisp, and clear. This is a great mic and a real sleeper value that I think beginning VO artists should check out.
