Finally A TACHOMETER
Yes its a tachometer, its cheap, small, and does what its supposed to.Read the manual to make sure you know how to hook up the Illumination wire. It states explicitly to connect it to +12volt if your system uses a dimmer those sometimes limit the ground or negative voltage. Your illumination must be connected to the right kind of wiring system. I didnt have a problem I used the glow from the cigarette lighter for when the dash lights are on.Connect the green wire to the NEGATIVE coil wireHow to test? Go out, find your coil (or ignition module) and use a multi meter, use alligator clips because you dont want to be standing there probing off your ignition module with your bare hands. Use the carframe ground to ground black negative and use red positive to see which of the two Coil leads gives you +voltage. Well that is not the coil lead you want. Another way is to connect both alligator clips to both leads and then start the car if you get Negative voltage then the black negative probe is plugged into the positive lead.Ok it makes it complicated but you really must know what you are doing when you mess with electronics...Tachometers do work on Diesel but you have to refer to your manual and technical mechanical solutions to make it work properly.I took out the Incandescent bulb and replaced it with a green LED bulb. Looks beautiful, matches my instrument cluster, bright enough.Bulb style: 74 or 24Tiny bulbs.I connected the +12 power to the radio line and this seems to work fine for when the key switched to "On" the needle on the tach moves to 0rpm.I have no problems with the radio but mine is only a 40watt system. If you were to have a larger watt system perhaps its possible but pretty unlikely you could have interference with the radio or the tach.Oh!The green wire was fun to push throught he firewall holes. Mine are made of rubber and to get a wire shoved through it (with all the other wires!!) you have to be persistent and creative!...Other thoughts:At first I was concerned about the size, maybe I should have gotten the larger one for a few dollars more? Now im glad I did not get the larger one because this one is easy to read and fits in the dash perfectlyMy dash is already pretty limited with a clock, dummy lights, indicators, fuel guages, etc... but with this it is mounted custom and I have no problems.Maybe if you mounted it to your steeringwheel or to your dashboard you can get a bigger one or wherever. My application was to minimize used space while maximizing utility of the space. Many thanks to amazon for having great prices.

Retro style in an easy to install, good looking, great working tach
OK, 2 years into ownership. Still working flawlessly. It was easy to mount. Instruction were easy to read and understand. Typical Super Tach styling. Small size, easily fits into cramped interior without being in the way. Works with 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, or 8 cylinder engine with the flip of a small internal switch. Supplied bracket is formed so that it can be attached to the steering column with a large hose clamp as they have done since forever, or it has a screw hole if you decide to bolt it to something. The bracket also will swivel 360 degrees so that it doesn't have to attach to something below the tach if you are mounting it somewhere else, like I did on the A pillar. Wiring harness is enclosed in a nice black outer covering so you don't have to see all four wires exit the back of the tach, just one nice clean piece of insulation. The tach also has a moveable shift indicator if you need that feature. Basically for the uninformed, its a second needle you dial to the desired shift point, when the tach needle lines up with your moveable needle, you shift. See, almost fool proof. LOL

Not a bad little cheap tach
Not a bad little cheap tach. It was about the perfect size to fit into the gauge cluster of a 67 Mustang, in the dead pod usually used for a clock. After removing it's housing and bezel so I could mount it flush, it works great.

great cool little tac that is affordable!
i really didn't wan't a big tachometer specially for my car. this one is a good size its pretty small and convienient. easy to install as long as you have pretty good electrical skills. its a hassle at first, finding were to put the wires took me about 30 min. it comes with instructions that tell you what all you need to do and even what color wire from the distributer to connect to. i just recently put in a blue light to match the rest of my cars lighting and it looks great. it's real easy to find different color bulbs just look for something that will fit a (74 miniature wedge bulb).its a good looking tachometer i would definately recommend it.

Great tach, easy install, and it works.
I installed this tach on the steering column in my 1986 Toyota 4runner. It's a great tach for the money. The mount was a little too tall so I cut the base off, welded a small 16ga plate to form a 90* angle, and painted it. It's about 3/4" shorter now and fits great. The only downside to this guage is it's a little dim for my taste so I replaced the bulb with an LED from superbrightleds.com and now it's a lot brighter.

good tac
Very easy to install, I put it in my 1985 F150 5.0 and it worked great.Only complaint is a fairly slow response of the needle and after a few years it stopped working.
