Jim Dunlop Flow® Gloss Pick 3.0MM - 3 Pack

...Near instantly revealed their greatness! I did review the 2mm already; regardless, it's important to note, the thicker pick was something I had to get used to over time with my electric guitar. When I decided to go with the 3mm, the thicker pick was not something I was unaccustomed to — so, if you are used to say ...a 0.88mm pick only, there's a good chance you might hate these (hopefully just at first...). With that caveat out of the way..., these 3mm picks will unlock your Beast Mode! And in Beast Mode, speed, precision, power...they all benefit. After the first few days, I was playing faster than I thought I'd ever be capable...& that's no gimmick, no exaggeration, no attempt to sell product, & it is not a joke — that's absolutely sincere. There's something about the tip of these picks, combined with the high gloss, & the force through of the thick pick, that Tremolo picking, for instance, I know I can hit 1/16 notes; indeed, I would bet I can hit 1/32 notes. Now, this did not come without some change from the norm though. For instance, a two-finger grip isn't likely going to cut it — these will fly halfway across the room if you're pushing your limits with a two-finger grip. Instead, I use three fingers; the pick is held by my thumb & middle finger, & my index finger sits on top. I use my index finger for support, but also for articulating the pick's relative orientation — for example, my standard play, I will have the tip angled in slightly toward my wrist. When I need to play extremely fast, I take the angle off & then twist the pick to about a 30° angle perpendicular with the strings. This is all guitar blasphemy for the purists, but I don't argue with the results...(?) So, I do recommend giving these a chance, maybe starting with the 2mm. Expect some time getting used to them, & some time breaking them in. The Gloss of the picks when striking the strings causes a slightly fluted sound. But, after a short while, that noise will disappear. There's a real chance you'll hate them at first too; but, I'd say give them some time because they really are awesome for an electric guitar. They're made from some type of polyurethane, so they are pretty durable & I personally think they are a good value for the money.

I used to use Stubbys, both the larger standard sized, and the Jazz III sized. The big problem with them is that while they are great brand new and slip across the strings, they wear out super fast. Even a little bit of wear is enough that they don't slip over the strings anymore, and they end up just being regular picks. I tried a handful of boutique picks, including Gravity and a few others. They are great, but pricey. Like starting at TWICE the price of these and going up to 4-5x the price of these. It's hard to justify $8 a pick when they are so easily lost. So I tried these when they came out. First I tried the regular (brown) flow. I liked them, and they didn't wear down, but they didn't slip over the strings as effortlessly as the boutique picks or brand new stubbies. Close, but not quite. Then when the glossy versions came out, I tried those. Perfect! They glide and slip across the strings effortlessly, just like the $8+ boutique picks. They don't seem to ever wear out. And at around $3/pick, you just can't beat them. Plus, they feel thinner than they are too, which is nice. I prefer the red 3.0mm for guitar. For bass, shortscale bass, and sometimes baritone guitar I like the green 4.20mm standard Flow picks, but I'm generally not doing complex, fast picking when I'm using those picks to playing those instruments. I'd like to see these in different shapes so I could experiment with them.

Overall, I like these picks quite a bit & I've used them quite a bit...& I'll probably continue to use them quite a bit too...(?) BUT! When I first started using them, I was really back & forth on whether I even wanted to continue using them or not; &, if I'm honest, there still is that occasional doubt...(?) Now though, it's more of just selecting a different pick initially for playing new material that diverges from what I'm accustomed. These picks are precise, they move fast, & they have a nice contour to them for an easy grip. They're also rigid & form a distinct point. So, while they are precise & fast, they are not very forgiving — if the tip even touches a string on an electric guitar, they will produce a fairly strong sound compared to thinner & rounded picks. So, I imagine they might frustrate many when first playing with them. It's something that you have to get used to...&, believe me, I have one that I modified, smoothing out the tip. It helped avoid the accidental strikes, but it became de-glossed &, therefore, slower & unable to produce the same quality of sound. So, I didn't end up using the modified pick all that much. Despite the initial difficulty I found using these picks, I still found myself choosing these (or this...as I've really only used one & modified another...? They're not easily destroyed...) whenever I sat down to play my guitar. & Now it's pretty much exclusive use of the 2mm Flow Gloss. So, in my opinion, the benefits are precision, speed, & clear & strong sound. The drawbacks are the learning curve or a possible adjustment to your standard manner of play. These picks are thick & unforgiving; if you take on a song with lots of power cords, you're pushing through them all...it sounds cool, but it will either tax your hand or your wrist more than you may be accustomed depending on your form & rate of adapting to the different pick. If you use a thinner pick & rely on the pick bending, these won't...& playing a power cord might feel like you're going to rip the strings right off of your guitar. That's not likely, but it will wear your hand, wrist, & arm down in short order. Overall, they're less than $10 for 3; they're unique; & I think they are definitely worth trying out. After all, I went from hating them to more or less preferring them as standard use...(?)

Best picks for fast playing

These replaced a long-time relationship with the purple 3.0 Dunlop stubby picks, which at the time even won me over the Dunlop Jazz III (quite over-rated in my opinion). Every great once in a while, I'll try a different pick of a different shape or material. These picks are made of an almost glassy plastic that feel to me like they sort of "bounce" off the strings. They have like a deflection to the string which makes it extremely effortless with speed-picking and/or strumming. They are of a good size (unlike the very tiny Jazz III), and don't easily slip out of your grip due to the grooving of the print on the pick surface. Lastly, they last. I can go about 3-4 weeks with one, before the tip just gets too rounded and rough. The ONLY downside, they are a bit pricey for what they are. In my humble opinion, if playing fast and articulate is your thing, happily invest in a good pick even if you have to spend the extra cash!

I've been using Dunlop 3mm Big Stubby pics for at least 10yrs... I read the description on these and thought I'd give'em a whirl. I really, really like these Dunlop Flow Gloss 3.0mm Guitar Picks... they're smoother and run through the strings with greater ease. I also find them to be a bit more comfortable to hold.

Long lasting picks that don't slip out of your hand. The pointy tip stays that way for weeks to months and provides high speed precision. I like the other flow thicknesses too, down to 1.14. Thinner than that starts getting too flimsy for my taste. I use these for bass. For guitar, I prefer their smaller Jazz III.

Excellent Quality

Love it! Learning to play electric guitar, I have to learn to pick gently but with precision. This thick pick is great for either strumming or picking since it is firm and pointed.
