rather pricey, but so useful for preparing a trip to Eritrea last summer - I learnt so much that was useful and was able to use the vocab sections to communicate effectively with my host family whose English was almost as limited as my Tigrinya!

This book is absolutely fantastic, having bought the Amharic one by the same authors, the layout is the same which makes it easier to learn if you're learning both languages. Great price and the explanations are clear! I have noticed my fluency improve after studying this for a couple of weeks!

Firstly there are so many errors in this book spelling and otherwise. Secondly the very first thing the author shows you is a completely botched map of Eritrea and Ethiopia which does not show the borders of each nation AS SANCTIONED BY THE UNITED NATIONS. Also thing to know is that if you are planning I’m going to Eritrea this language book will not help as it teaches Tigrayian (Ethiopian) Tigrinya. This is similar to American English VS Australian English. So the title this book is incorrect and should be changed.

Mit diesem Buch habe ich Ge'ez (die Buchstaben für Tigrinya und Amharisch) lesen und aussprechen gelernt. Es bietet einen guten Grundwortschatz, der nicht alphabetisch, sondern in thematischen Kapiteln sortiert ist. Außerdem findet man kleine Phrasen und ein wenig Umgangssprache. Auch etwas Grammatik (ca. 30 Seiten) gibt es und diese ist mit Beispielsätzen bereichert. Alle Worte und Sätze sind zunächst auf Englisch geschrieben und sortiert, dann in einer recht verständlichen Lautschrift (allerdings nicht IPA) und schließlich auf Tigrinya in Ge'ez.Es gibt ein paar Fehler bei der Übertragung der Lautschrift von Ge'ez, die aber keine echte Einschränkung darstellen.Nach einem halben Jahr bin ich jetzt an einem Punkt, da möchte ich noch mehr Struktur der Sprache lernen, um selbst besser Sätze bilden zu können. Hierzu habe ich mir "Tigrinya Grammar" von John Mason sowie ein zweisprachiges Kinderbuch bestellt.Zum Lernen der Vokabeln nutze ich die App Anki Droid, die ich ebenfalls absolut weiterempfehlen kann.
