Excellent for planning exciting hikes across Europe
A VERY good selection of hikes across Europe. I'm only sad that I'm too old to complete many of them. The hiking equivalent of a superb menu in a superb restaurant!!

Genuinely inspirational.
I’m not always a fan of list-type books (‘100 Places to See Before You Die’ etc), because they are usually quite scant on information, or just fairly predictable in terms of the recommendations being made. This Epic Hikes book is a bit different though, essentially being a series of mini essays from people who’ve actually done the hikes in question. Because there are multiple authors the writing style and quality does vary a bit, but that’s actually part of the charm for me. I also love the theming (for example walks based around geology, wine, modern architecture, via Ferrata, pilgrimages, canal towpaths and so on). Good range of difficulties, from challenging peaks to easy urban. The maps aren’t detailed enough find your way, so the book serves as initial inspiration, and you’ll be wanting to top up with OS maps or the like for when actually out and about. But I was genuinely inspired by the writing and now really want to do a Danish design walk, forest bathing and Dutch windmill trail. It’s specific to Europe which is also great given the current high cost of long haul flights, and the remaining COVID restrictions in some Asian destinations - you would be able to plan most of these walks without much trepidation or risk. Also recommended as a Christmas fireside read when you just want a little bit of escapism.

Awe Inspiring Imagery
The media could not be loaded. Visually stunning imagery in full colour photography throughout - they dont skimp on the sheer volume either. This is a heavy tome of a book perfectly suited for the coffee table. The main stories in the book feature first -hand accounts of hikes and treks across Europe. Each includes an orientation guide to coordinate and plan the route, including:• total distance• best time of the year to hike• how to get there• any special equipment requiredThe stories and treks inspire you to delve further into the book with the aid of the useful 'More Like This' section, which suggest similar hikes in other regions. The book is well laid out. Colour coded contents guide users according to difficulty of the trek to be undertaken, which takes the following into account:• length of time• terrain• remote or challenging• local conditionsHaving had a good read though and as an avid climber and walker, I notice that many of the terms in this book aren't for the novice. If you feel inspired enough to undertake some of the well written stories and the beautiful imagery, it is worth noting that you should be appropriately prepared and researched safety precautions to keep yourselves and others safe.Epic Hikes by Lonely Planet is a complete guide and thus, all required information is given to you in a candid way. It doesn't help to do a bit of further reading though, before you undertake your journey.Regardless of whether you're a seasoned hiker, this book is an excellent and well laid out, visually stunning read.5 stars
