Yes. I have used a dry erase marker on mine when studying the map with my daughter.

Could I stick pins in this or is the lamination too thick?

You can but it it just laminated. You would need to have a cork board behind it. I use map stickers

If map's really "double sided," why doesn't vendor advertise it & show photos? Would seem an obvious selling point..

It is double sided the side I have up is the more clear side so I can see the names of the countries.
