I love the durability and look of the box however for $70 I expect better quality overall. Both sides have mold all the to the inside not just on the outside. Mold can and will take over and kill the bees. There is a crack that they tried to repair but they only repaired the one side. the one corner has a chunk of wood missing. I ordered this box because I needed it, no one local has any in stock.

Good for the money

This Mellivo Langstroth style hive super comes constructed from sturdy pine and plywood with finger joints for tremendous strength like most hives are. For the price, it’s rather roughly made, though. This is not a lovingly crafted wood masterpiece, rather, a means to an end. A tool. That’s fine, but I feel that should be reflected in the price which is quite a bit more than other hive components that are shipped to your door. And I don’t feel the “military grade” coating (which looks awful btw) justifies the cost either. It has a plasticky/resin-y bubbling texture, a bit like most drywall finishes which does seem durable, but both my hive and super came with some, albeit superficial, damage just from being shipped (it did not come in a box or with any protective covering). This doesn’t give me great confidence in its resistance to the sun and rain. Everything is uniform though, and the comb frames have a sheet of plastic comb covered in beeswax (these have a slight tendency to fall out in transit, but they are secure enough when stationary. Overall, I’m pretty happy with everything except for the price. Whether it’s good value will come down to how much stock you place in the coating that they’re bragging about. 4/5 stars.

I have to admit that I do not yet have a bee hive. Being a newbie, I thought this was a complete hive - but now see there is more to it than just one box. :-) This is the "super" box, which is used on top of the deeper hive boxes where the bees live. The "super" is an extra box where bees store their extra honey, which can be removed from the hive to make mead with. :-) You leave the hive boxes alone and the bees will eat that honey over the Winter months.The box itself is well-constructed with just a couple staples that were not all the way in. Just a few taps with a hammer fixed that. It comes with 10 frames and is ready to go on top of you existing hive. I am impressed with the pebbled coating on the outside of the box to protect it from the weather. So with just this 'super' box, I am going to build the rest of the hive myself. I found a step-by-step with video on the Family Handyman site and will be constructing the hive boxes, bottom, and top myself this summer. I will just paint the outside of the box because I am not sure where Mellivo gets their coating from.So by next Spring, I should have a hive all really for bees! Wish me luck!

This bee hive with frames arrives in a cardboard shipping box as it does not come with a top or a bottom and the frames would fall out definitely. This is for adding to your existing bee hive box. It is best to place on top of two deep frames where the bees and queen would love and then this shorter box on top where you would collect the honey. This would hold about 45 pounds of honey I guess. It is very well made and impressive to look at. It seem indestructible. When it arrived, one bee came over to check it out immediately before I even moved it over to their area. I called Mellivo about a dozen times only to have their machine answer saying what their office hours which is when I was calling and it would not let me leave a message either; so if they don't answer the phone and don't let you leave a message, what kind of customer service is that?

The super bee hive is a very sturdy frame structure. The "military spec" label comes from the outer coating, which is not simple varnish but a milky plastic-like coating that seals and protects the wood. The frames have beeswax starter sheets pre-applied. This hive box will be more than what you are expecting if you have previously used cheaply-made boxes, but it's worth every penny they're asking for it. Note that this is not a complete kit, with base and top, but for beginners what you should consider one "level" of your hive—you will need more equipment to make this a working beehive. However, this is a very solid place to start and will satisfy.

This is a well constructed hive box with a super strong coating. I’m a big fan of not having to paint it and it’s so durable it will keep the wood protected for a long time. This includes ten frames with foundation so it’s ready to go when your hive needs a honey super or an additional brood box if you use mediums. The price is comparable to beekeeping supply companies but it works out to be a little cheaper since it’s already assembled and doesn’t need to be painted. I think this company makes great products and I’m looking forward to ordering more as my apiary grows.
