Well-organized and easy to read with great illustrations that make framing easy to understand. I'm an Architect with construction experience and this book is a practical reference that I actually use. This one (4th edition) is still pretty current (in 2026) but there's also a newer version with minor updates to address detailing for energy efficiency. Most of the fundamentals have not changed so I can still pretty easily extrapolate what's needed from this for energy-conscious details. Review: Nice desk reference - I love this book. It provides graphic depictions of structural design for easy reference.

Comprehensive Light Framing Guide
As a rough carpenter, Ill say that this book has a wealth of information regarding stick frame construction. From foundations to roof framing, it'll give you a picture of how it all comes together. Plus plenty of common design variances and reasonings for each to expand your construction knowledge. Complaints of mine are that the book doesn't delve in to heavy framing, nor does it touch upon A-Frame structures. So, this book is focused on the more mass produced style of light framing we typically see today in suburban/urban areas. That aside, it's worth noting that this book won't hold your hand in exactly how to assemble an entire structure. Those with a background in, or moderate understanding of, rough carpentry will find this book more useful than someone seeking to learn from the ground up. For the latter I recommend getting firsthand experience in the field or seeking another text catered to the crowd. Still, I would say that this is a worthwhile resource to pick up.

Valuable, accurate, easily referenced information
I am a contractor and I find this to be a very valuable resource as a quick reference for framing residential construction projects. The illustrations are perfectly labeled and foolproof. The book is user-friendly in that it is divided into sections intuitively which makes finding pertinent information easy. This is a great book for anyone who may be building anything from stairs to a new roof, or for a homeowner who wants to do repairs, install a window, or check to see that their home has been properly flashed. Well written, well illustrated, highly recommended.

A lot of knowledge in the book
I haven’t read the book completely but the parts I have read have provided me the required knowledge to understand every house framing part, materials needs and the purpose of them.

Well Illustrated
I bought this book because I am about to undertake a major renovation of a small house I have owned for some time. I wanted to be in a knowledgeable position to discuss the foundation and the framing of the home's additions when I begin working on the construction drawings with the architect. Also, I just find knowing this stuff to be interesting, since most people have very limited knowledge about how their homes are constructed.

100% recommend for any construction tradesman
As someone just getting into residential construction this book has great, no, AMAZING information. It’s easy to find information on the fly when I get stumped or trying to plan out a house. It covers everything in super simple diagrams and terms from the foundation all the way to the finished roof. It’s not a step by step guide but I find it extremely helpful (ie; with floor joist spans, beams, roofs, roof trusses, foundations).
