Superb
What a superb book. After studying Cosmology and General Relativity personally for a few years (and buying all the classics books : Misner, Thorne, Wheeler, Wald, Hobson et al. (excellent!), Carroll and Ostlie; Weinberg; Schutz etc. I found this. What an amazing book!! It was written for University students to be a comprehensive source on the theory and observational aspects of Galaxies and Cosmology. It’s such a wonderfully rich resource!!I found that all the above classical texts didn’t really give a ‘feel’ for the observational side, whilst the standard observational cosmology books are too woolly . I am more of a theorist and love the theoretical approach, but without a full understanding of the observational side there will always be something lacking in the modelling. So I was delighted to find this.I’d say all undergraduates, graduated and amateurs would find this text incredibly useful. As for which format. Choose the paperback. It’s well made and will last a long time. It is a shame people are downgrading their view of the book just because of the binding on the hardback. (I urge those reviews to change their review score!!)If I could have given it 6 stars I would.

Broad, deep, and very readable
This is the best book on cosmology that I know of. It gives the latest theories, explained very well even for nonexperts, and it also presents the mathematics, carefully done to be as readable as possible and to eliminate all irrelevant complexities. Highly recommended to any intelligent person who wants to go further than popular science! I would assume that even experts would find it refreshing reading (I am not an expert on cosmology, but I do publish scientific articles in other areas).

Un buon equilibrio
Testo ben bilanciato fra teoria e artcoli, sintesi e grafici e foto.

5 stars for content, 0 stars for the binding
I just received my copy (Oct 13/2017) having ordered it assuming that the concerns others have raised in past years about poor binding would have long since been resolved. Sadly the copy I received has the same issues. The book opens unnaturally flat because the pages are barely held in place and so the binding offers almost no resistance to opening wider than any similar sized book would. You immediately get the sense that as long as you don't open it, the pages will be fine, if you get my meaning. It's ironic though because otherwise, the production seems almost lavish for an advanced physics textbook. Nearly every page has a diagram, graph or full colour drawing/photo, and the pages have a decent heft especially when compared to many texts these days which are printed on paper so thin you can see through them. The book is physically quite large and heavy with every page dense with text, equations and graphics. Content-wise, the amount of information on display here is astounding, and based on going through the first chapter, the writing seems exceptionally clear. It's easy to imagine this book was a labour of love by the author. So in spite of the binding concerns, I'm giving this book 5 stars based on the content.

Absolutely outstanding!! The amount of information is unbelievable ...
Absolutely outstanding!! The amount of information is unbelievable. It's hard to imagine how Schneider was able to encompass such a large volume of material and explain the vast breadth of astronomy in such a clear, but precise and detailed manner.
