All TechTrep courses are available anytime, anywhere. Students can work at their own pace, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in their project. All courses are also taught by real people, meaning students get the assistance they need to complete the course successfully. Throughout the 3D Design and Animation Course, students learn how to design their own unique world from their imagination, complete with detailed characters, landscapes and objects. Using Blender 2.7x (a free included download), students then learn how to animate motions and movements in their environment, creating a wonderful, shareable world. Best of all, students are eligible to participate in a Spring or Fall Showcase (depending on enrollment date) to share their work. Click the 'Add to cart' button now to get your student started. All they need is a PC with Windows 7 or higher, or a Mac with OSX 10.7 or higher.

Great software, but younger kids will need support
I was intrigued by this class on 3D graphics. My son has started showing interest in the topic, and I wasn’t sure of the best way to teach him. I figured that my husband would be able to help him with this course, and this review incorporates his feedback. Since the product description said it was for kids, I expected to be able to set up my son’s computer and let him learn something about 3D graphics. As I previewed the material, I realized that it was going to be a bit advanced to let him use it on his own. This isn’t a major problem for me, as I have used Blender in the distant past and am familiar with many of the concepts.Whether this course will be right for your kids depends, to a large extent, on their age. A kid in high school could probably dig right in. For middle school children and below, it would depend on your and their comfort in an online class type environment. For instance, it is quite nice that the course comes with an online mentor. There is also a social aspect to the class. If the child is not yet ready to be using social media unsupervised, you will need to participate with your child to get the most out of this class. The class has a few other dependencies, such as access to YouTube. If parental controls prevent such access, some of the material is not available. For the class, uploads of various types are expected. This again may run afoul of your household’s, or your network’s, online rules. On the same topic, Blender, the 3D program that this course teaches, is required. It is a free, open source program (though they love donations), and is not a major problem to install. However, it assumes that your kids and computers have permission to install open source applications.Getting past all of that, you are probably wondering if the course is any good. While I have not made it to the end as of yet, what I have seen is easy to understand and the information is presented in small enough chunks so as not to be overwhelming. The beginning section goes into a little bit of the history of 2D and 3D graphics, then moves into the concepts that will be used to operate Blender. Once in that section, the material uses standard Blender graphics as a starting point to teach how to create and modify objects in the 3D program. We did not have to contact the mentor yet, but it is useful to have a personal contact in case you get stuck or need clarification. This program is very much an online class, and not just a casual overview or simple tutorial. For us, it works well with adult supervision and help. If your child is ready for it, this program can serve as a great introduction to Blender and many of the concepts that are common to 3D design programs. We received this product at a discount in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Simple interface allows kids to easily complete this course on their own!
I have a 13 year old son who is a computer and gaming fanatic; his big dreams in life center around these two areas, so as a result, I wanted this 3D Design and Animation course for him.You start out with the log-in screen, which takes you directly in to your account. Everything is laid out nice and neat and it is easy to follow where you need to go. There is a welcome message from your mentor to read first, and from there, we moved to the beginning of the course, where we were given an introductory lesson on how to Navigate Canvas. The Navigating Canvas course walks you through how to message your mentor, how to submit lessons, check your grades and change your settings. You are then shown a page of all of the mentors, followed up by an Introduce Yourself Page.Once we were finished with the Introduction, it immediately moved us into Module One (or lesson one), where it walked us through some of the basic history of animation and applied it to current day movies that my son is familiar with. There was one video included at the beginning from Youtube to illustrate Clay Animation, but unfortunately, the permissions to view this video had been removed so it was not viewable while in the program. The other videos that were included did work correctly. The steps for the assignments were very clearly laid out with step by step instructions that were easy for my 13 year old to understand and follow, and the submission process was also easy for him to understand. There are plenty of interactive portions throughout each lesson, with enough text to convey information without being overly wordy. There does need to be some additional proofreading, however, as we have already come across a couple of words that don’t belong or are misspelled. One of the things that you are required to do for this course is to download Blender, which is a free, open-source 3D animation software. I did some research on the program itself before downloading and it is generally considered a very safe program to download onto your computer. It took approximately 10 minutes to download on my computer. The first lesson walked us through a very basic creation on Blender that basically just ensures that the program is working correctly. We are just through the first lesson of the course, and plan on handling a lesson a week, over the weekends. So far, I am pretty impressed with how easy the course has been to follow and how simple the interface is to interact with. The Blender program looked a little (ok, a lot) intimidating to me as I watched my son use it for the few minutes that he was in it, but since the next lesson is on how to use Blender, I hope that both of us walk away from that lesson with more understanding of how to use it.I will continue to monitor my son’s use of the program and update the review once we are done with the program.**I received this product at a discount for testing; the review above is an honest representation of my experience with this product, and has not been influenced in any way.**
