Is the opening where the coffee comes out a decent size? I don't like mugs with a very small hole and each sip is only a tiny amount.

there are two openings that are about 1.3 inch in length and thin along the rim . you can drink from both openings and it definitely yields more coffee flow than other tumblers but it doesn't feel like drinking straight from the mug. but this tumbler gives more coffee flow than other peep hole type :)

Question 2

How leak proof is this? Can it handle jostling inside a backpack? I am considering this for hiking.

I’ve found with mine that if you overfill just a bit you may get get liquid up in the threads and that is where the leakage comes from.  Just don’t overfill.  There is a line just below the treads. This is where I fill my mug to. Using this technique I never have an issue with leakage.  I’ve been using this mug for 3 years now and will buy another.  Possibly the next one with the handle. Sealed up I can carry this in my inside coat pocket without worry of leaking. I drink my coffee black but still rinse the cup and lid on a daily basis and will take the lid apart for more complete cleaning weekly. I will probably never buy another style of mug again. I love my coffee being hot 4 to 6 hours after filling.

Yep, I've had no issues with it so far. Just make sure to take the lid apart. If you don't, gross dishwasher water will get stuck in there.
