What was the difference between a permeate and booster pump for a ro unit?

There is a HUGE difference. I am on a 420 foot deep well that has less than 60psi so needed a permeate pump to even make an RO system work. The permeate pump takes hours to recharge and the resulting pressure is still very weak. I finally upgraded my old Apex water system to the i-Spring with the pump and it's like a day and night difference. Water flow is double or triple the strength and the recharge rate is about 15 min. as opposed to hours with the permeate pump. Takes my 220ppm TDS water down to 15ppm.

Is the booster pump noisy?

I have had my unit for well over 9 months and have not had any issues. The unit is under my sink and you can hardly hear it run. It is well worth the money to have if as my ice maker would not function properly with our old system which did not have a pump.

Does this unit require electricity to run? I do not have an outlet.

This unit Has a Booster Pump and Does Use A Transformer To Run. I Believe It Was 12 VDC That Actually Runs It , That Being Said You May Wire It To Run On A 12 Volt deep Cycle Battery and Recharge It Whenever Needed As Well. The Unit W Pump Is Really Used Where Water Pressure is To Low For The R/O Membrane To Be Efficient IfYour Pressure Is Good You Don't Really Need This Unit.

does this have the new recirculating feature so it doesn't waste all the water down the drain? My plumber told me about it...

This does not have the recirculating feature. I did not want one with that feature because it brings the minerals (like calcium carbonate) that were removed from the RO water back into your hot water supply. If I wanted to save the water, I would rather pipe it to water something in the yard. We probably use one or two gallons of RO water a day (for drinking, coffee and ice) so the volume of discarded water is not that much. I would guess five gallons a day.
