What is That? Said the Cat (Scholastic Hello Reader, Level 1)

My 4 and 5 year olds are both starting to read. This is a favorite for both boys. They love the rhyme and repetition and the story just makes them bust a gut at the end EVERY TIME! My 5 year old has started to leave for school with a "See you later, alligator!" and a huge grin. Short sentences. Large print words. Lots of repetition. Adorable illustrations. Everything beginning readers want (and moms who get to listen over and over and over and over and over... want too! :)

My 5 year old loves this book. She can read it everyday and not get sick of it. Which is saying a lot, as she has a hard time connecting to most books out there. It is well written, memorable, and fun! Highly recommend, especially for reluctant young readers.

As a former 1st grade teacher & now the mother of a kindergartner and a pre-schooler I find that most reading series books listed as 'level 1' have too many words that frustrate beginning readers. If kids can't read two words out of every 5-8 word page they get frustrated & give up. "What is That?" Said the Cat uses rhyme and repetition to be readable and hold interest and it's funny - at least to my kids! My kindergartner has read this one to his brother - and anyone else who will listen - over and over since receiving it in his Xmas stocking (he's even giving the animals different voices & expression now). I've bought several other series 'level 1' which will sit on the shelf for a few more months, but I'll be looking for more Hello Reader level 1 books and more by Grace Maccarone.

Very engaging with silly rhyming like fox carrying a box and cat sayings what is that etc. The pictures really add to the text and makes it come alive. Even my three year old wants to read this book even though he is not proficient in reading yet.

My grandson loves this book. He takes it everwhere he goes. I would highly recommended for a young reader.

My 5yrs. old grandson was immediately interested in this book. The pictures grabbed his attention and the rhyming words held his interest. Along with enjoying the book he is learning some new words that are listed at the back of the book. I know he will be looking at this book many times. As a grandparent, it really helped to know the skill level of the book so I wasn't buying a book that was on a third grade level for a kindergarten age child. I was confident buying a Scholastic Reader book because their books are always of a good quality.

I care for three small children in my home, the oldest of which is three. This will be book number four that he has learned to read by himself. This makes him so happy and proud (me as well), and each time he masters reading a book, he gets his own copy to keep as a gift for his hard work. Now the youner children (both two year olds) are imitating the oldest one by pretending to read. I let them have their turn too! Books are such great teaching aids. I'm sure I will be purchasing many more books in the future, and the pleasure will be all mine.

I am the mother of a struggling reader. This book is perfect for her to read on her own with very little help from me. It has helped build her confidence in reading! I recommend this book to any struggling reader, an advanced 4 year old, or for just a simple book to have your kindergartner/1st grader read alone.

This is one my most favourite books for young children. A quick read, funny characters, easy to memorize for the young ones. I add it to every baby shower gift.

Ce livre est attrayant tant par les illustrations que le texte qui rime et, je pense, facilite la mémorisation. Si mon petit-fils adhere á ce format, je lui prendrais certainement la collection.

Again, book is nice, in fact, the proceedings are quite fun, but I misjudged in buying for my non-English-speaking household. I need this kind of books in Baanglaa.

Mon fils de 7 ans fait des ateliers d'éveil à l'anglais depuis 3 ans.Il aime ça.J'ai acheté ce livre pour lui faire la lecture car son apprentissage est basé sur l'oral.Livre excellent dans son contenu.Il est un peu cheap (livre de basse qualité) mais vu le prix il n'y a rien à dire.Je le recommande donc.Et si vous avez plus de moyens, il existe une autre version moins cheap.

Si bien que mes élèves le connaissent par cœur! Car il est construit en rimes! Seul changement que j'ai opéré, j'ai tout transféré au présent , mes petits n'apprennent pas encore le prétérit!
