MUCH BETTER than I anticipated -- attractive, durable, and carefully assembled
REALLY glad I read the Amazon reviews on this product! Informative, detailed, and led me to a good choice for my needs. I bought two of these -- one to replace the sheath on a 1970s Bowie knife that I inherited from my father -- and one as a replacement for the sheath that came with a Ka-Bar knife (leather-washer handle, 7" blade) I bought a few years ago. Other reviewers wrote that the leather and workmanship of these sheaths were exceptional, especially considering the price -- I found this to be absolutely true. This is a good product, tightly stitched, cleanly cut, and made from thick, pliable, attractive leather. I also like (very much) the inclusion of a third layer of leather to protect the stitching from the sharpened edges of my knives. Placed directly on top of the original sheath for that Ka-bar, all dimensions are exactly the same -- right down to the location and length of the handle-strap and the material, size, and appearance of that snap. So the Ka-bar knife fits its new sheath PERFECTLY. The overall effect is clean, attractive, and "businesslike" (as opposed to "busy"). And, because the blade profile of my dad's old Bowie is similar to the Ka-bar, that blade fit the second sheath perfectly as well. GREAT purchase; THANKS, reviewers!

Great quality, traditional styling, fits my knife great
Used it as a sheath for an Old Hickory 7025 Butcher Knife (7" blade) and it fit perfectly. Quality is terrific. Leather is soft, but strong. stitching is extremely good and it looks good, too. I've used different outdoor knives for years, but I've been in a "best for your dollar" quest of late and found that this $10 sheath and a $10 Old Hickory makes a pretty good camping knife setup. The carbon steel in the knife throws sparks on a ferro rod well. Anyway, this is about the sheath... For the price it can't be beat. It's an excellent, old-school, utilitarian, well-constructed basic leather sheath. Love it compared to all the Cordura nylon sheaths on the market these days.

happy
I have a classic full-sized Kabar from, I think, the 1980's I got at the swap meet. The original leather sheath it came with came damaged and I replaced it years ago with a Kydex sheath that was bulky and never seemed appropriate, didn't do it justice. I wanted a quality leather sheath and this one from the original manufacturer in the classic style seemed like the best idea. I chose the plain one because it looks nice and clean. The sheath I received looks quite close in color to the one in the picture. I oiled it with Obenauf's LP but it did not soak up much of it. The snap was really tight at first but after oiling it and leaving it closed around the handle it loosened up just enough to easily close and is perfectly snug. My Kabar fit into the sheath perfectly, slightly tight at first but is now formed around it. I have had the sheath for only a couple days now. The craftsmanship and quality seems good, including the stitching and hardware. I'm going to continue oiling it to loosen it up so it is less stiff, but not a requirement for everyone just a personal preference. Highly recommended so far.

Handsome and well made, but perhaps too-soft leather?
I am impressed with the workmanship (for the price). Simple, neatly stitched and riveted, good metal snap, drainage hole in the bottom (or for a dangling string or thigh retention thong?). Only problem I have with it is that the leather really seems to be too fine and soft for a knife sheath. Maybe I shouldn't have oiled it after I got it, but I've never had problem before. All I know is that after using it for a few days the whole flat place above the opening of the sheath is deeply gashed and slashed by my knife tip. The slightest contact will slice deeply into the leather, and some seem to have gone almost all the way through. This makes me wonder how long it will even be in one piece (although realistically I think it'd take a long time to serious structurally compromise it). I quickly learned to be more careful replacing the blade, and got some practice in holding in the right way and inserting it. But even so, when I'm out in the brush and have to take it out and replace it repeatedly with one hand, more deep slices keep appearing. So maybe I'm right to worry! I'm no leather expert, but I am sure I've handled leather objects made from harder, more resistant leather than this before. Supple isn't really a necessary thing for a working knife sheath, toughness is. For the price I can't complain to much, but if you plan on doing more than keeping a show knife in it, or if you care a lot about appearances, maybe think twice and look a little harder. If you just want it to work and don't care how it looks, I'm sure you'd get several years out of it, which is good enough for the price. I don't complain when my $35 boots fall apart after a year, so I won't complain too much that my $15 knife sheath isn't totally perfect in all regards. I think it's good for the price. But it'd be better if the leather was tougher. I wouldn't mind if it got scratched a bit, but this is seriously easy to slice into, without any resistance, seemingly.

Nice leather sheath for a 7" ka-bar knife.
This is a decent leather sheath at a really good price. The handle keeper snap strip was a little tight at first but stretched right out after I put some neatsfoot oil on it and snaped it over the handle and then slowly over hours/days pushed the handle up so a thicker part of the handle was under the strap. Now it's perfect. The leather is fine. You can tell it's not top quality, but its probably better than you should get for the price. The length of the sheath is actually right for the 7" ka-bar. It is a little longer than it needs to be but that is because there is a hole in the bottom for a lanyard so it has to be a little long. The tip of the blade on my knife comes just to the top of the hole, so it is the right length. I like it better than the weird blocky plastic sheath that came with my ka-bar.

Performs as/better than expected
bought it for a costume. Seems like it would fit most standard 7" fixed blade knives, even if it is marketed as a sheath for a Ka-Bar. I'm currently using it with a rubber training knife I'll be dolling up for a prop and it fits like a charm. Leather is solid and feels like it will hold up well, since I'll probably pop my hunting knife into it once the costume bit is over. A little saddle soap to soften it and add some flexibility and this is a keeper. Good purchase. would buy again.

Item Fantastic - Picture is correct for product 'PLAIN' leather sheath
Item is very well made thick leather, is stained dark, and is plain with no logo so that it is exactly the item pictured. It has a drain hole at the bottom so that water doesn't accumulate in it. Fit's my Ka-Bar perfectly snug with absolutely no room for play. The top strap is very tight to snap at first but that's just how you want it and it will loosen up a little in time so that it's easier to snap (This being tight shows that it was made correctly because the leather will loosen up a little. I was concerned that the leather would be unstained but it's nice and dark. You'll notice that the image doesn't match the description. Description states: "Embossed with the USMC logo" But the picture is for the plain one. I emailed Amazon but they do not want to change the description (for some.....uh......reason).

Great Sheath for Ka-Bar 1217 Knife
This is my second sheath ( to be used with my Kabar 1217 USMC knife ). The first thing I did was darken the leather . ( still in the process ). The results of darkening have been great ( so far ). I gave a few applications of neatsfoot. Didn’t really seem to do the trick ( to my liking ), and I have zero patience- so after I let it dry a bit / I then used some mink oil ( I figured that if it could darken my Red Wing Iron Rangers, then it could darken my sheath ( I did the same treatment with the USMC sheath ). I’m liking the process . Going to let it rest a while and will treat again as time goes by . Check out the photos . I really wanted this sheath for 2 reasons ; 1- I want to keep the USMC sheath for collection reasons ( it will be cared for ). 2 - I want to use this knife as my go- to carry knife ( walking dogs every day thru the woods you never know what lurks ), and for camping etc ., etc . I’m not going to be so protective of this sheath but I would be paranoid to mess up the USMC sheath . Make any sense??? Plus- I’m a huge fan of “ Sons of Anarchy “, and I noticed that the main character ( Jax ), has the same exact knife ( Kabar 1217 ), but does not use the USMC leather sheath . So there you have it . Highly recommend to anyone who wants to preserve their USMC sheath .

Great, well made.
Got this for an Old Hickory 7-inch butcher knife and it’s a great fit. Leather is thick and robust. Seems well made. Satisfied.
