I have been highlighting all the terms and definitions in this book so I can try to understand it. If you are a Psych student you will find this handy as well. These types of tests were used on me successfully about 40 years ago. But this is all updated of course. I really believe this book does a great job of organizing the information, and it is very easy to use this book providing you are serious about the subject matter. Of course I would like to have had more of a background before attempting to use this book, but it does a good job if you can read at a college level. I have taken some Psychology and this is all very familiar thankfully; otherwise I would be lost. This book is meant to complement actual testing. I think these testing tools are under-utilized. There is a difference between the information people can observe and what we tell ourselves as the book points out. The only clinician who administered this type of texting to me was extremely helpful to me. This person has been featured in Psychology Today, and he is a cash-only doctor now.

As the text states, this is a "concise yet thorough review" of the Rorchach instrument. It is especially helpful for students since the text focuses exclusively on this instrument. (This is one volume in an extensive series inclusive of gifted assessment, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD assessment, etc. So know that these are intensely devoted to a single topic, making the reader markedly more knowledgable after the completion of each). The text moves from the relatively simple to the technical. The student will appreciate the section devoted to the instrument's history and development. Though relatively brief, this section goes far as to recognize the key individuals responsible for creating, popularizing, and coding the instrument. Likewise, any student can appreciate the lay-out of the overall text. Gray "caution" boxes act as potent reminder to the reader. These are crucial aspects of the exam that are set-off to emphasize their importance. For instance, one "caution" box reminds the examiner to always weigh all factors of each examinee's life/circumstances in order to receive the best results. Likewise, there are "rapid reference" sections which provide information quickly and are also presented in easily-to-locate gray boxes. Additionally, brief self-exams are offered sporadically throughout the text, ensuring that the student is keeping up with the information. These small check-ins assist the weary reader (i.e. potentially overworked student) in knowing when information has not been processed or when further reviewed may be necessary. For the student, there is invaluable information here from an expert in the field. Let the author guide you with her personal experiences and theoretical knowledge (both of which are included). This text is indispensable for students who will be using the Rorschach instrument. It not only prepares the student for coding the exam but provides valuable historical background that many texts are inclined to disregard. Likewise, the personal experience of the author herself allow for unique, personal assistance. An essential text for students. Highly recommended.

Got a set of Rorschach cards as a stocking stuffer and it got me interested in how they were actually used, so picked this book up. Was blown away by how much care and detail goes into evaluating people using these specific ink blots! Book is very dry and reads like a medical book, but I thought it was well written and well organized. Looking forward to reading more.

This is, quite simply, a one stop shop for understanding and administering Rorschach tests. I would say that this book is essentially a full semester college level course for those seeking to understand and feel more at ease with Rorschach methodology. This book does not include testing materials. Definitely recommended!

Many in the psychological field don't use the Rorschach at all, but for those with an interest and some time available to dedicate to learning the art of utilizing the Rorschach, the process will allow for new insights regarding your patients. One key to understanding the Rorschach lies with Rorschach himself, and an excellent new biography written by Searls will be gratifying to new and longtime clinicians alike. Of course, at the end of the day, we are interpreting exam results, and because of the complexity of the Rorschach, scoring is more than a simple process of checking off right and wrong answers. Much more. This text leads us through the essentials of that process along with an introduction to Rorschach testing that allows the student to quickly provide the testing in a standardized manner. Treated as an introductory test, the book is wonderful, but it should be looked at as a start in a field that runs particularly deep. I took away one star because I'm not pleased by the decision not to include the actual inkblots anywhere in the text. The actual inkblots would be extremely helpful for illustrative purposes as each situation is discussed in the text. I certainly understand the concern of having the actual images widely distributed, but that horse left the barn long ago and the actual images are very readily available to everyone (on wikipedia, among other sources). Given that the images can be found easily and quickly, there is no longer any reason not to incorporate them into a text on the topic so that the reader can quickly see what the text is talking about without having to simultaneously refer to another reference.
