Do you need internet to play this?

Yes, you'll need the internet to play, but you won't need it all the time. The game shipped on CD included the opening/tutorial and all of the game basics but you must have the internet to download the bulk of the game (the porting from PS5 to PS4 was still being tested when they had to start making the CDs for shipment). Once you download the rest (with its patches), the developer has stated that you can play offline but will need to reconnect to the internet for future patches.

Can game be played offline? I see it says internet required what is that about?

Yes, it can be played offline but you must first connect to the internet for a huge download before you can proceed past the opening/tutorial. We've now taken our system on two trips and played without issue (and with game saves that worked successfully) but this was after the game had been downloaded.
