Alligators are just like their relatives, the crocodiles, large lizards, which have lived on this Earth for millions of years. They are easy to distinguish from crocodiles based on some characteristics: They have a short, massive head with a rounded snout. When its mouth is closed, you can only see the teeth of the upper jaw. Their coloring is dark, almost black. Young alligators have yellowish transverse bands. Great Mississippi alligators are found in the southern United States, the smaller China alligators in the Chinese river Yangtze. Alligator mothers guard their nest until the young ones hatch. Then they carefully carry them in their mouth to the water. They protect their young for many months before they are left on their own. Alligators eat any prey that can catch, attacks on humans are rare. Alligators are shy of humans.
