How long does the filters last?

Grayl states 250 liters or 3 years from the first use - I bought it for my travel to 3rd world countries for 3 weeks. I drink about 4 liters a day, sometimes more when the place i am visiting is hotter than I am used to. After that trip, I did not use the filter for about 2 years - I picked it back up and it filters well enough.

anyone taken this as your only filter for multi-day backpacking? Any tips/ backup req'd? This seems less likely to break or fail than other methods.

Zero moving parts. Burly design. Pretty tough to break. :) However, common sense says, carry a backup. Those little, terrible tasting chemical tables work. So does boiling. Happy trekking.

Can you fill it up with snow?

I don't think this would work very well. The water you want to filter goes into the outer shell, then you push the inner shell, with the filter on the bottom, down through the water so that the water is forced up through the filter and into the inner shell. It seems as if trying to push the filter down through unmelted snow would just compact the snow into a solid mass in the outer shell, i.e., nothing would be forced up through the filter and into the inner shell. You'd need to melt the snow first.
