Really puts out the heat, but...
Yeah! Really puts out the heat. Bought this strictly for one purpose - to make coffee in the Lunchroom at work. Old school, all glass PYREX Flameware Percolator. To accomplish this requires a strictly temperature controlled, precisely timed (timer turns it off automatically), heating device. Turn it on set to a specific time temperature and turns off automatically. Can't stand over the pot watching. Must be unattended operation, fifteen minutes later and a piping hot, perfectly brewed cup a joe ready and waiting.I set my pot on the burner glass of the Cukor heater, turn it on to Max. Right away the heating element starts to glow and only a few seconds and you can feel the heat emanating from the burner. About a minute and I can see bubbles forming at the base of the percolator stem. Impressive! Wow - this baby really puts out the heat! A little longer and it seems apparent that water will be boiling in only about 5 minutes, (my guesstimate). Wait! What just happened? It shut off? about a half a minute and it turns back on?I find out out that the temperature is not controlled by the amount of current through the heating element, but by shutting the element on and off for predetermined amount of time set by the position of the control knob. At Max, 24 seconds on and 16 seconds off. I timed it with a stopwatch. after ten minutes the on/off time was reversed, i.e. 16 seconds on and 24 seconds off.Imagine you have a gas stove. You put on a pot, turn the gas to max burner for 24 seconds and the shut it off for x number of seconds, then back on again to max flame? For this type of device it's much less costly to have a timing circuit to just turn on and off than to add extra (more costly, uses more electricity), heavy duty current limiting circuitry and heating element. Safety perhaps? I don't know; but my cheapo, old-school 1950's glowing red coil burner that I got from Salvation Army for $11 works just fine. Turn down the heat, coil glows dark red, turn up the heat, coil glows bright Orange. Turn down the gas, low flame, turn up the gas, High flame. Leave it be: a steady. continuous flow of BTU'sAlso important, the instructions explicitly state that this device can not be used with an external timer to turn it off and on. In my case it just turns it off that probably would not cause a problem.Set to minimum, it turns on for a few seconds, then off for... too long. It would take a half hour to warm a baby's bottle of milk.If you were frying bacon and eggs in a heavy cast iron skillet, this could work. For me, I can't say it doesn't work; just not for my very specific application. Setting up my gas stove on a timer like that in a thermostatically controlled gas furnace would be ideal; possible, but complex and time-consuming for all but the most intrepid tinkerer.I can't see how this device can't be designed to work with a continuously variable heating element just like a gas stove. At Max output, using only 1100 Watts it performs very well. A change in design could cost a little more, but I believe it would also dramatically increase sales. I happen to be the happy owner of an Instant Pot. From an end-user standpoint, this thing is a wonder. Still going after hundreds of uses. Don't know how I ever lived without it! If and when it does expire, I'd replace it immediately. My Pyrex Percolator, simple, straightforward; it works, every time. Easy to clean, gleaming glass; will last a life-time.Over time I have seen a paradigm shift in the attitudes of Government, Institutions, etc. In an increasing number of cases, the bottom line has overshadowed the idea of products designed for people. Profit first, people last. Even when something works very well, is only for a limited time. A lot of reviews state that they bought the latest version of whatever... to replace their old one that lasted for 20 years of continuous use; disappointed that this newest version only lasted 4 months. The Engineering that produced this Cukor device, the modern school of thought is for more cost-effective, greener, safer, (read: no class-action lawsuits) - innovative new ideas. My guess is, the 20 year old Technical Institute student who designed this probably has never tried to cook with it. God forbid we fall should back into the dark ages of 20th century 4-barrel carburetor gas guzzling cars with no seat belts. Personally, I really like the idea of a Freeway full of Electric Commuters, Go Elon! But I find that for some things, old-school just works better!Walter O.
