Introduces Critical Thinking
A great book - The purpose and point of this book is to introduce critical thinking and to teach problem solving.I would recommend that this workbook is started only after your child knows how to count, add, sort and some simple subtraction (up to 20), and not before. The purpose of this workbook is not to each these skills, and as such, the math problems are simple and may seem easy. This workbook introduces, the child, how to understand the problems, make a plan, solve the problem and check the answer and explain thinking. Think of this workbook as a primer. Critical thinking is a difficult skill to teach, especially to 4-6 year olds, this book does a good job at doing this.My son, an average 5 year old, was unable to initially do this workbook by himself. While he reads well, he did not fully comprehend what was being asked without my help. A large part of this workbook is learning how to decode the questions. . . an important skill. I had no issues teaching the material to him; however, if you are not prepared to sit and work with your child, this book is not for you. By the middle of the school year, he was able to work with little support.I am surprised that word problems are being taught in kindergarten, so it was well worth starting this early in the year. The skills learned from this workbook are well worth the effort.
