can I add a shoulder strap?

Yes. Yes you can. I haven’t tried, but might even get a third party strap to work.

I there room underneath the foam insert to store stuff like a landing pad?

There is no extra space under the foam for a landing pad. I use a LL Bean tote for the other stuff.
