McCarthy's Field Guide to Grammar: Natural English Usage and Style
T**Y
Stating the obvious and not very helpful
This book purports to be a grammar guide but much of the advice is not really grammar, it is about the definitions of words (meter or metre, continuously or continually etc) - and much of it is simplistic and staying the obvious - which is OK if you’re aiming a book at newcomers to English, but does not seem to be the target market for this book. Consequently, many entries look like they are there to pad out the book (hardly or hard). Does the phrase “Lots of” really need a section? At the same time an important grammatical issue for many people - when to use “that” or “which” - is completely omitted. A glaring omission. If this book was called something like “a simple guide to English usage”, then that would be fair enough. But a grammar guide it ain’t. (Or, at least, isn’t a very good one.)
