Best sharpener for Prismacolor pencils
Like many others, I suspect, I've tried a number of sharpeners with my Prismacolor pencils. After all, a sharpener is a sharpener, right? Well no, not when it comes to Prismacolors. The core is too soft for the battery/mains operated sharpener I use with my polychromos and Caran D'Ache pencils, so I've built up quite a collection of manual sharpeners in search of 'The Best" for the Prismas. Most of them can give a good point but there's a fair bit of effort involved as the wood casing catches easily on the blades. I really didn't expect this sharpener to be any different, even though it's marketed as being the one to use with Prismacolors, so I held out against buying it until a few days ago. All I can say is, using it with these pencils has been a revelation. The blades cut through the casings cleanly, with little catching, and nowhere near as many turns (of pencil or sharpener, depending on how you sharpen your pencils) are needed as with the other manual sharpeners I've tried. I won't be using this with my polychromos or Caran D'Ache pencils because I've got other sharpeners - especially the battery/mains operated one - which do an excellent job on them. This sharpener will be used exclusively with the pencils for which it was designed - Prismacolors - because in the long run I can see it saving money since it sharpens the Prismas so smoothly and cleanly.

A Must Have For Prismacolor Premier Pencils
I held off buying this pencil sharpener, despite buying the 150 tin of Prismacolor pencils, because I already had numerous pencil sharpeners. Plus, forking out another £7 or so for something I didn’t entirely need couldn’t be justified at that time. I soon discovered that Prismacolor pencils, as well as being absolutely awesome for colouring, are an absolute pain in the butt for sharpening. Shortly afterwards I moved and they were stuffed in the back of a cupboard and forgotten about for 4 years. I recently rediscovered my pencils - and how difficult they are to sharpen without breakage. I figured that surely the same brand of sharpener would sharpen them properly and, you know what? It does! Those of you who own Prismacolor pencils have probably already discovered for yourselves that some pigments are more delicate than others (We’re looking at you, reds and oranges) so tend to break every time they’re sharpened. This pencil sharpener remedied that for me - since buying it, all of my Prismacolor pencils have sharpened without breakages. This pencil sharpener has two holes for sharpening. One of these gives you a traditional, long, sharp point & the other: a short, blunter point like the type the pencils come with. Using the second of the two holes should resolve all your Prismacolor sharpening breakages - it has for me. In short, if you’re going to be investing in a set of Prismacolor Premier pencils buying this sharpener is a no brainier. Not if you’re wanting to enjoy using them rather than sharpening a large proportion of them into the bin! I wish I’d realised this years ago - I would have saved myself a lot of frustration!

The best pencil sharpener I have ever own
This sharpener actually works, don’t know how many sharpeners I own that have promised but never delivered on performance. Tried it on different makes of pencils before plucking up the courage to try it on the few prismsacolour I own and the dreaded Derwent pastels pencils which are almost impossible to sharpen without breaking. But not anymore, not one pencil broken in the sharpener… I’m most impressed, would definitely recommend this sharpener especially for the two difficult delinquent brands to sharpen. Only one small gripe, the top is awkward to get off and on again when it needs emptying. I’m going to put a line on it is it make it easier to line up when the top is put back on.

Good sharpener
I bought this sharpener after reading loads of reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, to ensure that I did not damage my more expensive colouring pencils (i.e. Prismacolor, Faber Castell Polychromos etc.) Being new to the world of colouring and using good quality pencils, I wanted to make sure I had a good quality product. This is a good product. I do find myself being a little cautious when sharpening and checking every now and again to ensure I don't over sharpen the pencils. I also find some of the pencils (Prismacolour brand only) seem to "catch" as you turn them while sharpening, so you have to do it gently. I like the ergonomic shape and how it fits comfortably in your hand. It's also handy that it collects the shavings, which you can empty out. A word of caution - be careful when removing the lid (try to ease it off as opposed to pulling it out quickly) as you could end up with shavings everywhere! I find it an expensive sharpener, and I'm still undecided whether it's actually worth the high price tag. I've heard that the Mobius & Ruppert brass grenade pencil sharpener is excellent, and it certainly comes with a cheaper price tag. So that may be a better option for anyone starting out with colouring and not sure if they want to spend a lot of money on it.

Works well
I have a tenwin sharpener which works well on my budget pencils but takes too much of my prismas and Kalours and black widows. Also sometimes leaves them uneven with small chunks out. This prisma one is smooth and gets them sharp

Sharpener sharpens all pencils sharply without breaking, performs well as compared to the price paid. However, I cannot seem to pull the cover to empty the shavings.

When you use hundreds of Prisma Pencils, keeping them sharp is hard work. After a few years, you find yourself collecting pencil sharpeners, hoping to find THE one that makes it easy, that produces a fine point, that holds breakage to a minimum, that feels good in the hand, and other attributes as well. This sharpener meets all the above requirements. Let me describe why I like it: • It is large enough to fit in the hand so that you can hold it steady. A precise angle must be maintained, so a sharpener that is steady in the hand is half-way there before you even put the pencil in. • It has a ⅜ inch neck that grips pencils with close tolerance. This is the other half of getting that precise angle and maintaining it. As you turn the pencil, the neck holds the pencil steady and doesn't allow it to tilt in relation to the sharpener. I just checked a half-dozen pencil sharpeners whose necks were from 1/16 inch to ⅛ inch. They do not hold the pencil straight. • This sharpener produces two points; wide and narrow. If you are a pencil artist, you know when each type is more favorable. Most sharpeners do one or the other. usually it's the fat slope, whose point wears quickly, but otherwise lasts a long time. The fine point will do detail work for a little longer between sharpenings. I'm very glad to have both kinds. • It collects wood and core shavings. They stay inside. If you turn it over, you don't get colored grit on your hands, which then gets on your drawings. The lid keeps everything in, yet flips up instantly when needed. • Empties easily once you figure out how. How to remove the cap: the top ⅜" (or just under a half-inch with the cap snapped down) is the part that comes off. It looks like part of the body, but it is tapered so that you can push up on it with your thumbs, and it will come straight out. Do not twist! Do not pull on the cap. The cap will last a long time if you don't pull or twist it. So, just get your thumbs under that last half-inch (avoid the decorative "wrap" part) and push straight up. • Large enough to hold a lot of shavings, yet small enough to fit in most bags without having to reorganize. • Will not dump shavings in your drawing bag/satchel/pack/case/drawer. • Pencil shavings are not pretty to look at. The smoked color of the Prismacolor sharpener means you don't have to. • Stands easily on its circular base. • While it is round (cylindrical), it is weighted so as to resist rolling. On a flat-rubber surface, I had to tilt it beyond 8 degrees to cause it to roll (empty). That's a greater incline than any railroad grade, and more than all but the steepest of automobile grades. It'll give you a fighting chance to catch it before it rolls down the hill you're sitting on while drawing Mount Rushmore. About broken pencil leads in Prismacolors: A dull pencil sharpener, and/or one that does not hold the pencil at the same exact angle against the blade, can indeed break the lead before you've finished sharpening, but that is not the major cause of broken leads. Prismacolors are very soft. Drop a pencil, and even though the wood appears unbroken, the soft core "crayon" inside will shatter in as many as a dozen places. Trying to sharpen one of these is an exercise in futility, and you often have to wait until you get to the end of one before it stops breaking off inside the sharpener. This is not the fault of the sharpener, though as stated above, dull cutters and loose necks can cause most sharpeners to twist off a shattered core before THIS sharpener would do so. Generally, as long as these cutters are kept sharp, this sharpener will resist breaking the core of the pencil. It must be understood, however, that once a pencil has been dropped onto a hard surface, or bent, its core is shattered and no sharpener can prevent it from breaking. You can only hope to find a piece that's long enough to hold until sharpened, then strong enough to hold while you draw. To sum up: the broken cores inside a pencil get twisted out by a dull sharpener or one that cannot maintain a proper angle. While no sharpener can prevent your pencil cores from being broken internally, this one at least does its best not to exacerbate the problem. In short, don't blame the sharpener... up to a point. Ok, so it's a long review for one of the simplest and ordinary tools in our box. But the thing is, there are differences between pencil sharpeners. I have them all. I love some of my tiny, handy sharpeners that can go in a pocket, a pencil case, an Altoids box (along with several erasers and other tools), but they are all guilty of being messy and not holding a perfect angle. This Prismacolor sharpener may be a bit more bulky, but it is probably the best sharpener I've used on Prismacolor Pencils, for the reasons stated above. If it wears out quickly, then I'll take back my 5-star rating, but so far it deserves what I gave it. Shooshie
