Carson MM-300 MicroBrite Plus 60 -120x LED Lighted Pocket Microscope, Grey

As an amateur microscopist who has professional scopes costing £100’s, I was very sceptical of this device mainly due to its cost and “plastic” appearance. For the money at the time of this review I thought I’d give it a go as I wanted a really small self contained portable scope for general magnification whilst out and about and on my walks. When it arrived and unpackaged it my first impression was how small it appeared in size, yet it has a very solid feel to it. In holding it and operating the controls nothing creaks or cracks and the controls are very precise and positive. There are three main controls, a simple push click on/off button which controls the LED illumination which is very good, even and doesn’t appear to have any image hot spots. There is a sliding protruding arm at the top part of the scope which controls the zoom (always set at the minimum smallest x magnification to start viewing) and lower down a very deep long focus control which is again positive in action with good resistance and works very smoothly without notching. The scope doesn’t come with any accessories and my only criticism would be that a rubber eyepiece cap would be a nice touch to stop dirt, dust and scratching of the eyepiece lens at the top of the scope when in your pocked. I will fabricate something or find a small cotton reading glasses bag or something suitable. It runs on one AA battery to supply the LED light which is close to daylight balanced. The scope can sit on anything flat and a nice touch is that the plastic supporting fins on the base are wide enough to fit around a standard aluminium “well slide” for aquatic samples. I also experimented with producing a white screen on max brightness with my iPad Air 2 and placing a pre prepared microscope slide with a botanical specimen on the screen and then turning off the LED and mounting the scope onto the slide, this produces good direct through sample lighting and again I was amazed by the results. I also tried placing my phone (Motorola G22) over the eyepiece and taking a photo which wasn’t all that successful as it’s difficult to hold the scope still, get the right angle on the phone lens and press the phone shutter button without moving but with some patience it could produce some nice results. Those with 3d printers may well be able to design and print some kind of mount to get better results. I have no idea how many hours illumination the single AA battery provides but a good high power make should last many hours. The scope can be used without the LED light in good sunlight as the base support stand is clear and allows an amount of direct incident lighting through to the specimen. Overall an amazing very capable device and perfect for getting children interested in the micro world or indeed like me amateur microscopists who just want something light and portable to observe our natural world whilst out of the lab.The photo is copyright of NBS prepared slides (cotton stem xsection) taken with the scope set to 60x (its lowest magnification) using an iPad white screen on full illumination 100% as the under specimen lighting with the Carson MM300 scope mounted directly onto the glass slide. Got the small (20x) and large (60 - 120x) set. Although the Q&A states that like all optical microscopes the image is inverted, this is not the case on the smaller model and this makes it much easier to use. Why they didn't apply this to the larger model I have no idea. The focus on both models is smooth and steady and the image is bright and clear in both also. On the smaller model the light controls are a bit fiddly. There's a slider to go between lighting up the scene, off and a small torch but it feels really tacky and I expect it to fail very quickly. Confusingly, the larger model has a press button for scene LED but on the smaller one, in a similar position, it's for a rather feabile UV light. For the money I am nonetheless impressed.

I really liked this microscope, and most importantly, my child absolutely loved it.At first, it can be a bit tricky to adjust the lenses properly so that a child can clearly see what they are supposed to see. Focusing the eyepiece/mirror also takes a little practice — but it is a microscope after all.Once they get the hang of it, it becomes truly fascinating. My child has been using it to examine insects, plants, bits of carpet, and all sorts of everyday objects.It’s a very educational toy, different from the usual ones, and great for encouraging curiosity and observation. A really nice way to introduce kids to science.

Arrived well packaged and in a timely fashion, Product exactly as described.Package contained Microscope and basic instructions.The Microscope has a nice premium look and feel and the focus and magnification "wheels" have a nice smooth action with just enough turning resistance (this is subject to what material the scope is placed on, smoother surface materials can cause things to move about more) and the power button and battery cover were both well constructed and nicely fitted. Overall first impressions were very positive, it is rare to receive such a well built product at such a price point.In use the illumination led is easily bright enough and makes viewing clear and well defined. After spending half a day hunting I finally managed to capture some flies and midges for my kids to look at. At lowest Magnification details were very sharp and the structure of the midges eye, body hairs and black shiny leg claws could all be easily made out. On higher magnifications things got a little blurry due to viewing a 3D object ( not all parts of the midge was in focus at one time) but the parts that were in focus were all clear and sharp and the level of magnification was quite impressive. Flat objects were much easier to view at higher magnifications. Viewing angles are good at lower magnifications but as expected get narrower at higher magnifications. By now we have used this Microscope to view many types of insect, sugar, salt and sand grains, flakes of skin many types of leaves, various fabrics and materials, and hairs and always got really good results.As some other reviewers have stated it can be a little difficult to focus and change magnification at times but this gets easier with use and as you get a better idea what makes a good viewing surface.The quality of construction on this item together with its good optics mean this is a very good microscope for both young and older users and combined with its price point, provides amazing value for money.I would highly recommend this product to other potential costumers.

I bought this to use with knife sharpening. It lets you see the very tip/edge of the knife and make sure it's sharp. It's OK, but the viewing sweet spot is very small so it's very tricky to use. The quality seems OK and I am confident that the published magnification figures are far more accurate than other similar products, so I don't regret it. But don't expect it to perform miracles!

This was a bit of an impulse purchase, as I haven't had a microscope for years and wanted to see what I could do without spending the £50+ a lab scope tends to command.Oddly enough, the Carson MicroBrite is surprisingly efficient in terms of price-value. I'm unsure on their claim of "120X" which relies on the fact the lens is zoomable, but it certainly does the job and can see things like individual strands in fabric knots without a problem.The construction is a bit cheap but I have belief it'll last a long time, and is very handy to have as a small little portable unit to look at nature and random things around you with.It could benefit from a stage as it relies on actually pressing the object against the base, but for the £15 or so quid I paid I must say it's a great deal if you don't require 150-1,500X zoom levels found in lab scopes.Great purchase, fun little toy. The LED is surprisingly bright but efficient, it's easy to use with only 3 total controls (mag, res wheel, light), and the picture quality while a little blurry if the object isn't even is remarkably good.

This thing is awesome! I had bought a full size microscope to play with and wasn’t having much fun, so looked into other options and this popped up. Reviews sounded good so I gave it a go. So glad I did! Perfect for older children or curious adults… I have looked at all kinds of things - leather, fabrics, paint, papers, coins, leaves, and small bugs. Too fiddly for my 5yo, but if I get it focussed on a flat surface she likes to have a look. Great size to carry around, can be used in any lighting conditions due to the bright LED, just a fun little device. It is hard to take pictures through (I think you can get one with a home clip? That may have been a better option) I’ve included two pics of a $1 coin at 60 and 120x, they’re not the best quality though. Very happy with my purchase.

Incroyable! Petit mais très performant et très facile à prendre en mains... devenu l'allié de nos balades en forêts. Ma fille adore pouvoir découvrir la nature d'un oeil plus aiguisé. Je recommande.
