How strong is this in comparison with clay from the kiln? I am looking for a more natural and strong alternative to baked polymer clay.

It is a very strong medium to use . I am making solid objects with it which is every bit as strong a kiln fired clay.

I purchased this to keep 2 drink cans into shape and one has set brilliantly but the other one is still pastey and not setting what did I do wrong?

Maybe didn't mix it evenly but could be anything.

Non-flammable. It's the same as plaster of Paris, but stronger. It's mixed with water.

Can I put gold leaf in the plaster mixture?

You could but why would you? That stuff's expensive! Better the shellac and gild your finished product.
