Gabriel Dropout, Vol. 1 (Gabriel Dropout, 1)

*Gabriel Dropout* is a comedy manga written and illustrated by Ukami. It tells the story of Gabriel White Tenma, who is a young angel who becomes a worldly slob upon descending to earth, and her "friends". These are the demon girls Vigne and Satanya, and the fellow angel/sadistic troll Raphiel. The term friends is loose as really only Vigne is a friend while the other two are just acquaintances/annoyances to Gab.This manga has very little real plot beyond the girls' meeting each other and acting out in front of the reader. It's comedy and that's mostly it. Though if the anime adapted it at all faithfully, there should be some small plot points here and there.The art isn't that great, to be honest. It isn't bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but neither is it great. It is passable, and that's the best that can really be said for it. It'll get the ideas across, but that is about it. Except for the facial expressions though, which are actually quite good and communicate the comedy well.The thing that sells this is that comedy and also the characterization. Not that the characters ever really change much, because they do not. But as annoying as static characters can be, in this case it is critical to the comedy. Gabriel is an angel that might as well be fallen. She cares nothing for humanity and wants to cause the Apocalypse at one point to keep from being embarrassed. Raphiel isn't evil, but she is a sadistic troll that enjoys bullying Satanya more than doing actual good.Meanwhile, Vigne is the complete opposite of Gab. She is a demon that might as well be an angel. She is helpful, kind, gracious, loving, studious, comes to the aid of others at the drop of a hat, etc. She really is the perfect foil and opposite of Gabriel in every way. Raphiel isn't the opposite of Satanya so much as one who torments her. Basically we have the bad angel, good demon, sadistic and disinterested angel, and incompetent/not really bad demon in the girls. Watching their hijinks, with some issues I don't like taken into account, is a lot of fun.For some the manga is hard to read, as for some bullying is beyond bad to the point of being a berserk button. That's how it is for me, so I can understand such concerns of not liking gags having to do with bullying. Even so, if you skip past those sections, you'll enjoy this funny manga series.Rating: 4/5 Stars.

This was a gift to my grandson who devoured it within hours after receiving it.

I decided to read the manga after I found out the anime wasn't available in english, and boy am I glad I did. This is one of the funniest series I've ever seen, and it's all thanks to the wonderful cast of characters.Gabriel the lazy angel, Vignette the pure hearted demon, Satanya the incompetent demon and Raphael the sadistic angel. They all have their own unique charms and together their hilarious.I highly recommend this series to anyone that just wants to laugh and have a good time.

Though the idea of a perfect student turning into an otaku is hardly a unique idea this manga has enough amusement to keep it fresh a bit longer. All of the characters are fairly interesting and the angel / demon premise does make it different enough from other slice of life manga to keep you getting bored. Definitely worth reading so far - hopefully it will keep it up.

Gabriel Dropout é um mangá maravilhoso, os personagens são incríveis (gosto muito da Raphiel) e a história é bem diverta.

Comprei o manga depois de ver o anime, a história é leve e engraçada, a entrega foi sem problemas.

I have read quite a few comedy manga and normally even the one that weren't as good where ok. This was not ok. I thought the idea sounded pretty good but the execution was just bad. The art was cute nothing to complain about there, but the actual story and jokes where just to cliche and not funny. I think that that geeky character (in this case the main character Gabriel) can sometimes work but only when done well. I felt as though this was like a bad excuse for an otaku character. There are so many better more funny comedy manga out there. Go buy those.
