The shoulder straps are adjustable. They come assembled but you can adjust them for your size.

Is the water bottle section sturdy?

Yes, very sturdy. It can hold a large, 32oz metal, wide bottle wit no problem.

Is the inside of the black backpack white like other jansport backpacks?

Yes ours was white on the inside.
