You get what you pay for! Dexter equals quality
I bought my last one of these at the beginning of 2016. Finally had to pitch it about a year ago when it was totally wore out. I used these at least weekly to sharpen a handful of kitchen knives. In the last year I've gone through a couple of Smith sharpeners to try something different. They work well also but don't last as long. These are much more fun to sharpen with and last much longer. I just received my second one a few days ago and I've been excited to get back to using it. I always used a steel in culinary school but they are difficult to find. if you are like me and have a wife who constantly uses knives but never sharpens them, this is a great way to quickly bring them back to being sharp whereas a steel will only keep it Sharp, honing it after every use. I wanted to buy the $16 knockoff, but after reading many reviews know that I will be disappointed after using this quality one. There is a reason this is over twice the cost. I have been using Dexter products for over 20 years and have been extremely satisfied!

Diamond sharpening steel, made in USA. Excellent size and quality.
I love to use a steel for sharpening kitchen knives. I had used the cheap ones in the past and just didn't want to purchase another one of them. I found this Dexter and purchased it right away. It is perfect and doesn't clog up like the cheaper ones do.

I couldn't go wrong with an exact replacement of proven quality.
I ordered this Dexter Diamond Sharpener to replace my worn Dexter 12in sharpener. It is identical and after reading so many reviews on other diamond sharpeners having issues with the diamond coating peeling off in only a few days or weeks, I decided that since my old one had given me great service for about the last 6 years it would be the sure bet. Though worn much smoother that when originally placed into service, my old Dexter still sharpened nicely though not as aggressively these days as I would like. The new one has a nice bite and a couple of light swipes before each use maintains a nice straight and sharp edge and regrinding with my power belt sharpener is hardly necessary except yearly. My only complaint is that the new sharpener was absent a swivel ring on the end of the handle to hang it from my pot rack. Honestly, I've owned the old one so long that it may have been a "field modification" that I had performed. Anyway, I drilled a hole in the end of the new handle and screwed the ring from the old sharpener into my new one. BTW, there is enough ferrous in the stainless alloy in this sharpener to "stick" to a magnetic knife rack if you have that arrangement, but I think that constant stowing and removal abrasion on the magnet surface would cause unproductive wear on the diamond coating.

It works
Using it every day for over a year. It works well. When it gets loaded up with filings I use dish detergent and a scotch pad and clean off the dirt.

Great for a quick go to
Looses the grit fast. Good for a quick sharpen but will never replace a wet stone

Easy to use for a Beginner or Expert and I'm an Expert
Being a Professional Chef I've bought a few sharpening steels over the past 30yrs and this is one of the best, if not the best sharpening steel I've ever had!! Great length, width of the sharpening steel. I like the fact that it's oval in shape as opposed to a round Carbon Steel as it seems to get a better edge then the round Carbon Sharpening Steels. While it may cost a bit more then the traditional carbon steels, this diamond steel works far better in my opinion. Great product, Great price, quick delivery. This is a definite buy item if you're looking for a high quality sharpening steel. I hope this helps you decide. Thanks.. ;)

Quality is medium
Coating comes off in chunks during first use. Otherwise useable but makes me hesitant to ever by D-R again.

Fastest edge touchup around
This is my fourth D-R Sharpener in the last 22 years. The previous one still had life in it but I wanted to donate it to the church kitchen (dull knives bug me). Our routine in our kitchen is knives are used for the job at hand and washed at the completion of the kitchen session. I touch up the all the edges with the D-R diamond sharpener before the knives are put away. You can actually sharpen a pretty dull blade with the sharpener but I generally go to a coarser diamond stone or one of machines for an edge used well past reason. We have about 15 paring knives and 20 longer knives in our kitchen.
