These reels run way bigger in terms of sizing than Shimano. the 3000 is like a 4000-4500 in terms of Shimano sizing. If you plan on using it for bass in freshwater, get a smaller size. This reel can handle bonito, striper, salmon, and other big fish. I hope that helps:)

I got the BG 5000, need to pick a rod for shore fishing mahi mahi. Any have suggestions?

Bro if you're fishing from shore for mahi mahi and you have a 5000 get atleast a 10ft rod !! Lamiglass is top choice among surf fishermen

What size reel should i buy? i have a 12' ugly stick heavy surf rod and cast up to 8 oz but usually 5 oz pyramids and sometimes 3 oz artificials.

Correct - the BG5000 is the right size for a 12ft or 13ft rod. My BG5000 took 330yrds of 50lb Jbraid and is very nicely balanced. The 6500 is a VERY big reel - about a shimnano 25,000 size.
