How to choose
If you are searching for a measuring tool for very thin items, and by that I mean under a half inch, this may be the best choice possible. But there are a lot of exceptions to that and that is primarily what I will be discussing here.HOW DOES IT WORKBut first before talking about if this is the best tool for your needs here is a quick overview of this specific model. I have to make the assumption that you know what the purpose of a thickness measuring gauge is so I'll skip right to the bottom line. This is be far the lowest price one I found anywhere. The starting point for such tools usually is about thirty bucks and it's easy to find ones in the hundreds and even ones in the thousands l. You get what you pay for but that doesn't mean it's a toy. The construction is a mix of metal and plastic and rigid enough considering the maximum capacity is just lest than a half inch. It is no frills all business - you put the material to be measured between the plates and press the button and the needle gives you a direct readout in millimeters. There are no conversion scales either analog or digital, no adjustments, no calibrations. There are no batteries or need to read an instruction manual. It comes in a fitted case to keep it clean and from getting knocked around.YOUR CHOICESThere are a few reason to spend more and one very popular choice that I am not fond of. That's the caliper style that is being sold, and given away, by hundreds of offshore companies. I bought three of them before I gave up and decided to get a purely analog device. The two are not really identical in what they are used for however, this style is for very thin materials where a precise measurement is important while the caliper type, at lease the flood of cheap ones, are best for getting a rough idea of the width of something between about a quarter inch to about three or four inches. By design they are not very precise for anything thinner than that.Getting back to this style of tool I mentioned you can get this one for about twelve bucks, a battery powered one with a digital readout that converts the units for you for about thirty bucks and then the very expensive models. If you are truly dependent on ultra precise measurements and a rugged commercial design, this isn't it and I suggest you look at a specialty brand for your needs. For the rest of us I think the decision is between a no frills no battery analog unit and one with a digital display. Don a key that decision based on accuracy, this one is probably going to be just as accurate for everyday use, it really comes down to if you are all right with getting your measuring millimeters and doing the conversation yourself to another scale or having the tool do the conversation for you.WHY I CHOSE THIS ONEI like to have a workshop with tools that are always ready to use, especially those that I don't use every day. I see no need for something like this to be battery powered. Second, the metric scale tends to be more precise and useful for most of use for very thin items and these days it's super easy to simply ask Alexa or another digital personal assistant to do the conversation for us if we need a specialty measurement, and there are a lot of them. This brand is actually built better than I expected and it is all I need. There is only one drawback to it - but it is the same drawback that almost every gauge and caliper has - and that's the depth is only about an inch. For example say your cell phone has a slightly curved back and you want to measure the thickness of it at the edge and at the center. You can't do it. But like I say that's not a downside of this model, only something to be aware of.YES OR NOI like that most if not all of the reviews are verified purchases and appear to be genuine. The item is well made, the documentation is acceptable and the accuracy is enough for the average homeowner or workshop, but obviously not lab quality for about ten bucks.

Hope it lasts?
It is really flimsy but appears to take good measurements. It has a case which should keep it safe.

My disappointment
I was very excited about my purchase and could not wait for it to arrive. I was however very disappointed when it arrived. The glass on the face was not fixed hence I could not get it to stay on "0" which resulted in not being able to get a proper measurement. I returned the item...:(:(:(Perhaps is the glass was not loose it might have worked, I will never know.

Had to return it
I did not realize this was mm. Well I did but I'm not that bright. I bought it anyway even though I measure foam sheet in mil or inches. Anyway I did not want to have to do the math to convert mm to inches at work so I returned it. Nothing wrong with gauge itself. Very accurate and really comfortable in hand. Still a five star piece of equipment.

Good buy and very handy.

Good for a more or less reading, not accurate at all
No matter what you do, it will never read the same thickness on anything. I bought it for leather but tested it on a washer, same exact point and never receive the same reading in about 8 or 9 times...

Very useful and easy to calibrate.
Used to measure the thickness of leather for leather Craft items.
