Evans Universal SoundOff Bass Mute

Put this on an 18 inch bass drum. You can still hear the bass but the chest-pounding THUD has been taken off. Works very well.

So, this is my first official product review on amazon... I think this thing is awesome. we live in a 2 br apt. This works as advertised. Reduces the loudness/feeling of the "thump" from the bass drum pretty significantly without compromising the "sound" of the thump. Don't get me wrong, the bass drum is still felt and heard and is still pretty loud... just at a fairly reduced level. If i were sitting in the living room, the drumset is in an adjacent bedroom. When played, its felt and heard, but I can still watch tv... turned up mind you... to my ears, the sound coming from the bass drum still sounds, well, like a bass drum... waaayyyy better sound reproduction than any drum mute for the snare, toms, and especially the cymbals when practiced/played together. As for longevity... my 9 yr old is the one that uses it on her Premier drumset (which is super awesome and I'll eventually review that set bought from here). Now she obviously does not have have a lead foot, so I'm pretty sure this will stand up for a long time. Now when I play her set, I consciously try not to smash the bass drum pedal... if a heavy footed person were to use this, I can see this product not lasting that long... for my daughter, it works great. I'm sure the neighbors appreciate her using it than her not using one. As for the striking of the pad with the beater feeling... you definitely know your hitting something other than the drum head. Doesn't bother me... doesn't bother my daughter. .. we don't really notice at all... she could still play fairly fast with a single pedal... can she play faster without the pad? Possibly... haven't realll tried to test that out... shes not playing death metal or anything like that, so not a huge issue here, anyways. will it bother some... I'm sure there are purist who will not like the feel of it... it all comes down to which of the lesser of the 2 evils one can live with. We think it's an easy trade off... Installation is easy and straight forward. Unpacking, installing, to playing took probably at the most 5 min... adjusting it to absolute perfect placement took maybe another couple minutes... simple and easy. .. how can you not like that... If this thing broke down, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again if I still lived in an apt. So again, reduces overall sound without compromising the actual "sound". My daughter can still easily be felt /heard laying down the backbeat with my other daughter playing along with her bass... which means the bass guitar amp volume can be turned down as well. There are other bass drum mutes that work equally well if not better... however, my daughter's bass drum is only 16" in diameter... this product is the only player in town... unless one modifies a different drum mute for a 16 " tom and modifies it to for a 16" bass drum. I love this thing... originally my daughter was using a roland electronic drumset with mesh heads at my apt and an acoustic set at her mom's. Obvioulsy the roland was waaaaaayyyyyy quieter. As much as i loved the electronic kit, When she started telling her music teacher that she preferred the electronic set "feel", I said enough of that and bought the Premier APK microbop set to keep her on the "acoustic" path. And this product at least helps to try to quiet it down... So buy it if you have a light foot for your or for the kids... if you're heavy footed... this may not last... for us, it works great... YMMV... have a great day...

I finally unboxed this this and mounted it to my bass drum. I purchased it in 2021. At about the 2 hrs mark this thing broke. And it snapped right where it mounts to the bass drum and since I didn’t notice it right away, it scratched up my 22in Pearl Clear Beats bass drum hoop. I play with my normal style of playing. Which is not soft hitting nor hard hitting. I definitely would not recommend this product. Sorry

Best drum mute out there. Tried different ones over the year and this is best. Compatabiity is great and it’s very stable. That’s important. Easy to put on and very portable. It will definitely quiet the bass drum. But it won’t stop it all together. The revound is good, not perfect. But I think it’s worth it if people are complaining. Enjoy!

This gets the job done, but its quality and design is a bit questionable. I don't practice every day, but frequently and the pad on this has softened and split where the bass drum beater hits. It's still holding up enough to provide muffling, but I question how long it'll be before the beater just goes straight through the pad. So just a heads up for others that may be surprised by the wear it goes through, but again, even still it is providing the muffling.

I bought all of the Evans SoundOff mutes, for all of my drums on my 7 piece kit and all of my cymbals. I'll gladly give every other pad for every other piece of the drum kit 5 Stars! The cymbal and snare/tom mutes work great! This one however I had some issues with. It adjusts really well to your comfort which I enjoyed, but that was all I liked about it. It muted the kick drum pretty well but it wasn't great. I play drums a lot and with living in town, these pads made it nice for playing later at night. So they weren't getting heavily used, but they were being used and decent amount. After a about 2 weeks the kick drum pad got a huge hole through it, defeating it's muting purpose and one of the arms that holds it in place snapped off. I used it like that for another couple months, covering it in duct tape until about a week ago I bought a new one.

This mute keeps the bass from being overbearing. You can still hear the beat but it's softer. They neighbors don't hear it and it doesn't aggravate the rest of the family when played. I saw a review that said something about the foam falling apart. If you FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, they tell you exactly how to avoid this problem. This product is sturdy, easy to install, and more than meets my expectations. I also like that it doesn't damage the drum and I didn't have to use tape or velcro to keep it on. The clamps have rubber stoppers/pads and the whole device is just great.

I use the Sound Off mutes on my entire kit and generally like them. However the pad on the bass drum mute wears out very fast, unlike the others. It is the most expensive one and really not worth it for a few months use. I'm not going to spend $100 a year on multiple bass drum mutes. The obvious solution would be for Evans to provide replacement pads for sale that could be slid onto the existing frame. The frame is already designed so that would be possible. If the replacement pads were $15-20 bucks a piece I'd do that. I Evans an email suggesting that but I'm not holding my breath. Overall the pads for the other drums are good but I would recommend skipping the bass drum pad and buying an extra Tom mute that you can duct tape to the bass head. Having blown through two of them recently that's what I'm going to do next.

My kids and I started drum lessons about a month ago, so I needed something that would allow us to practice without annoying neighbours and wife. The Evans SoundOff mutes certainly fit the bill. I purchased the bass mute having already purchased the Evans SoundOff snare, tom-tom and hi-hat mutes. The bass mute performs perfectly, reducing the volume to a level that (I'm assured) can't be heard by our neighbours, while retaining most of the feel. There is plenty of adjustment to allow the mute to be positioned correctly, and it only took me a few minutes to set it up. Quite handy if you occasionally want to remove it and play full volume. Evans claim to reduce the volume by 95%, and from my experience I wouldn't doubt it. As an additional measure I've added a duvet to the inside of the bass, this further reduces the volume to a level that is barely audible from the next room. The duvet alone wasn't very effective. The Evan's snare and tom-tom mutes are also very good at reducing volume, but even a novice like myself will notice the difference in the feel. The hi-hat mute is a different story; It certainly reduces the volume, but it sounds and feels like you are hitting a plastic cup. This may be down to the quality of my cymbals. it's only a beginners kit, and the cymbals don't sound that good even with the mute off, but my feeling is that even with better cymbals the effect would still be the same.
