In addition, the best quality of the book is how it is laid out. Each mini lesson is two pages. The left page describes the material and the right page provides the examples. No longer do I have to hunt for the examples in the discussion. And the book as less than $100. This was a true bargain in the run away prices of textbooks in colleges these days especially in the STEM subjects. Excellent textbook for the classroom or leaning on your own. I can look at a chapter and decide it has 14 mini lessons and that is manageable to me as opposed to saying I need to read 30 pages to cover the chapter. In addition, the best quality of the book is how it is laid out. Each mini lesson is two pages. The left page describes the material and the right page provides the examples. No longer do I have to hunt for the examples in the discussion. And the book as less than $100. Great format!
I love this book. It was the required text for my Java class and I'm glad. It's very concise, very easy to follow. The left page will be a detailed description of the figure on the page to the right, along with a breakdown of major takeaway from that section.

Best Book for Beginners
Explains concepts simply and with examples. The code can be downloaded and you can use the code to further practice the concepts. A good book to start learning Java. Should be on every beginning Java programmers shelf.

This book will get you to the point of being a Java beginner.
The good: Easy to follow. Great example code. Awesome simplification of concepts. Shows new technology. Friendly for beginners. Chapter challenges are good. Code compiles without error. The bad: Multithreading chapter was a rush job. Swing GUI was over emphasized for a 2018 book. Netbeans is quickly falling behind in modern developer usage. Does not teach how to create custom generic classes. Could cover the lastest topics such as JPA, etc. I'll make it easy for you: Beginner -> This book. Otherwise -> Java 9 for Programmers (Paul Deitel)

Wonderful Programming Book
Murach Book are easy to read and follow. They also include tips and tricks for the freeware software that you can use to learn the programming language.

Awesome.
I bought his book on Python and mastered it. And now I bought the one Java. "No other book teaches you so much. so fast, so thoroughly". It's true to it's word. Though I'd like to see a little more code on the left hand side of the page(1 or 2 lines), and a little more text on the right though that might be sacrilege to Murach!

Great Work Done
The author, Murach, has done a great job. I bought this book 2017 but started reading just about few mouth ago. I will recommend this book if you're doing self study.

Good book
Very practical book I have ever read before

Great book if you want to become a professional programmer
A practical book that goes straight to the point, with a good balance between theory and practice, unlike many other books which are too academic. It is clearly aimed at people like me who want to become professional programmers in a relatively short time and learn useful skills that are used in real life. As a former .Net programmer and a non-native English speaker, I find this manual quite easy understand and I confirm it's a great source of information. Technical note: The 5th edition covers Java 1.8 and 1.9 with both NetBeans and Eclipse. Examples, exercises, solutions, and corrections can be downloaded from the publisher's website.
