Q: What size is medium on someone?

Definitely a size 10/12. I ordered my 10 year old who is 80lbs, 4'9 a medium and they fit well with a little room to grow in the waist.

Q: Has anyone found about that fits through these loops without being an absolute nightmare?

Haven’t had any issues using these with Adidas belts.

Q: Is there elastic at the bottom?

No, these ones are sitting straight leg no elastic at the bottom

Q: Can they be worn as knickers too?

I am not really sure on that one. My boys wore them as their game pants for a baseball season.
